Are you new to this thread and a black or tan Barkers man? Those are very tame for my collection hehe

I am not new to the thread. I own a pair of tan Barkers, which I wear to places where my good shoes might beecome spoiled.

Are you a tall man? Anything below 6ft with shoes like that and you'll look iike Boss Hogg (though above 6ft you could look like Jimmy Nail).

Very pedestrian so to speak smile

Enough poking fun at the black or tan Barkers!

From a personal point of view, the broguing pattern isn't to my taste. They might work well with dark red laces.

Yes definitely one for coloured laces. Might alternate between red and yellow.

You'd be better with a left one to go with that.

Can anyone recommend a decent soft bag for shoe storage within a suitcase or luggage? Preferably one that keeps the shoes separate inside.

I am finding that when I put a pair of leather shoes together in a cloth shoe bag, they must rub together and move around, and by the time I get them out again they have gained multiple scratches all over the leather from the heel or sole of the other shoe.

Does anyone have a suggestion or solution for this as it's really irritating me now.

All of my decent shoes came with separate draw-string shoes bags.

I'll have to ask the Mrs if she 'tidied away' any shoe bags that may or may not have come with my last couple of pairs as I'm really not sure.

But putting each shoe in a seperare bag will solve the problem, but seems slightly unsatisfactory. You would have thought it would be possible to buy a bag that accommodates both shoes but keeps them seperate.

Any chance of some work shoe advice for a shoe neophyte?

I'm after a pair of shoes for office wear. The main thing I'm after is comfort and preferably available from high street type shops so I can check fit etc prior to buying. Bonus points for fairly simple looking ones without pointy toes (I struggle to stay upright in trainers, without an extended trip hazard poking out the front.) With a budget of up to £100-120, what brands should I be looking at?

At that price level in high street stores you won’t get anything really decent. If I were you I would note down all the decent brand and then scour the internet stores for the sale lines and then you could get some sweeneys, barkers, loakes etc. You can always return them if they don’t fit well. Example in the above post of a set of Sweeneys within your budget

I used to wear berties for work, found them to be a cut above the rest of the high street brands in terms of quality.

Now wearing oliver sweeney as they fit like a glove but you really need to buy them in the sale to extract value. I don't think they're worth the price of grenson, cheaney etc.

I don't see why people have such a downer on high street for day to day office wear. I've had some Clarks Brogues for about 4 years and with a bit of care they look like new with hardly any wear on the soles or anywhere else. Paid £70 at the time. OK they're not got the Goodyear welt but from what I read it's a bad idea to wear the leather soles in the rain anyway, so not always practical. I also have some Ikons which were a little more (11 years ago) but have lasted similarly well, could do with a re-sole.

Stay away from clothing shops that also do shoes, awful quality.

I don’t have a downer on them but many people thinking high street for shoes think clothes shops and as you say they are generally awful.

It is not bad to wear welted shoes in the rain. The issue is when they are new that they need to be worn in dry conditions to “condition” the sole before you do wear them in the wet.

Nonsense. This is PH and everybody knows that leather soles are treacherous in damp conditions and will result in you contracting trench foot.

The only sensible option is to wear rubber, as the actress said to the cordwainer.
