Manchester - wetherspoons - pints - £1.99. This explains some of the difference between my experience and a lot of you guys.
These cheapo bars attract the unwashedI sorry, but I really don't see how anyone can argue with anyone's position here. I'm with Tonker. Some of you may find that heavy going, that's fine. But, it isn't an unreasonable time/food schedule to many. I'm sure I can happily take out his itinerary in the time it would take some of you to queue up for a couple of Stones bitters down at the local hoy-poloy $hithole during the Friday masses.
Of course, if you put your mind to it, you could get the bus everywhere, eat at a grim chain, drink what's in offer, and walk for hours bar to bar. But, the question wasn't 'how little could you spend in a night out?'.
I make no apology for the fact, that while I could go out on the cheap, and have in the past, I have worked very hard for a very long time, made prudent financial decisions (and sacrifices), taken care of my retirement, saved hard, etc. I am in a comfortable financial position, whereby I can afford such 'luxuries' as a taxi, smarter venues, better restaurants, and picking the wine. The evening is consequently more enjoyable. My prerogative, my business. To have someone call it ridiculous, is just plain wrong, ignorant or jealous.
If Tonks comes to Hong Kong, I'll offer him the option of a G & T at Sevva, or a can of Skol from 7/11. 40p, and you can pick your own bench.

Entree, main and 2 sides? You been away from the north too long! Pub grub with mates is a main, fish n chips, burger n chips, nachos, etc. And serves you right drinking G&T's. Were you drinking with Royal Navy chaps? If not then yer just being poncy and gay for the sake of it.
And why the buggerings are you not getting the Tube after you have had a few????
Seriously, have I been drinking around a different London to the rest of you or something?
So basically you could have done it for well under £100 but you were being poncy and gay. Gotcha. Good job some of us havent forgotten our roots old boy just cos we're earning a few bob

So I'll say it again.I said the VOLUME of the food with the volume of drink was a lot together, not separately, but together. I didn't make reference to the amount of money spent at all or where it's spent. I eat in nice places too even if I don't sink 10 drinks in 4 hours!

I wasn't directing what I said at you or anyone else specifically, merely those suggesting that the concept of such an evening as suggested by Tonker was ridiculous. It isn't to a lot of people - in volumetric terms or financially. There has been something of an argument against both aspect. It's no more stupid than suggesting that you don't eat, drink or spend enough on a night out.
Each to their own.
I would deem my spending habits as ridiculous if I was living in a dump, eating from a can every other night, not putting my family first, etc. in order to facilitate expensive nights out.
Edited for gash spelling.

Between £30-60 is probably about my average, depending on location and who I'm with.
That said, if I'm in Glasgow or Edinburgh, I can easily blow much more than that, so I can definitely understand how the guys in central London / The City can blow the numbers they're talking about. Mind you Tonks, I couldn't do the volumes / timescales you're talking about - I prefer a much more relaxed pace, where food is concerned at least!
The truth of the matter is, there are so many variables attached to the question that you're always gonna get wildly differing answers.

This! Tonker, sorry, but your example was ridiculous.
No. It wasn't. On this evening, we popped for a few cheeky ones after work. 3 of us. A couple of pints each. A few games of pool. Out by 7.30. £20 down. Came home. Couldn't be bothered to cook. Called a mate for dinner. Cabin in Chiswick. Seafood Fest and a couple of starters. Couple of beers. £90. Home now. A pleasant night but not a night 'out'. Thought I had a result. All up for me about £80. Believe it or not, it is quite reasonable in London. result for me, anyway.ETOPS said:
So, Wetherspoons doesn't attract the great unwashed?

Absolutely. I have no problem pulling up to Maccas and asking for '£10 pound of food please' but I also am quite happy to pay £100 for a lovely steak. I guess I'm lucky. In that I was brought up to appreciate beautiful meat. Cost v Pleasure. And I'm able to afford it. One day that may change, as is life and I will be back to £10 of food. ETOPS, I will be in HK in a month or so to have a little memory lane from the nineties. I would welcome a showing around some foods and drinks!
And in return, I'll introduce you to a few people that will make you happy to be alive. Just don't be flying for a few days after.

£30-£70 max. I like to be going home at 12-1am, I'm only 25! Just tend to go to Wetherspoons for a meal, which usually is very nice(they are not so rough down here, didn't even realise they were considered the meeting point of the great unwashed) then maybe Yates, although I can't stand the music. House parties are better

To add balance, I know of a wetherspoons pub that has a fantastic selection of proper cask real ales, generally just full of old men too.
Probably the exception to the rule I'll admit!
you don't want that though, better to go where there is something decent to look at instead of old mens arse cracks.Probably the exception to the rule I'll admit!
