Posting this at the request of another PH member (who owned the car from new before me).

Nothing exciting I'm afraid, just a quirky old Mk1 Mondeo. It's a 2.0l 4x4 Ghia. They only made 300 4x4 models in total after taking part in this rally http://h2g2.com/dna/h2g2/plain/A611001

Anyway, there aren't many mk1 Mondeos left as it is and even fewer 4x4's.

Member markp1973's dad bought the car from new, then markp1973 had it after him. He sold it on and then I bought it from that person about 5 years ago.

Apart from the clear side indicators it's standard, came with the RS kit and 17" RS wheels from new. Everything on the car works and it doesn't have rusty arches or gaffer taped bumpers hehe

In fact it's in pretty good condition. There's no rust anywhere, no stone chips or trolley dings, and the wheels haven't been kerbed! Here's some photos:

That's really tidy, I've got a soft spot for old Mondeo's of that ilk, they look great imo.

Got any interior shots?

Love quirky stuff like this, how much did you pay if you don't mind me asking? Also as someone else said, interior shots as well please!

Looks great with those wheels.
I remember seeing that programme on TV at the time.
Wasn't it so cold that they couldn't turn the engines off the whole time to prevent the engine was freezing solid?
Also regular fires under the support lorry's fuel tanks :-)

I had a MK1 1.8TD. 90bhp I think and a tiny power band but it never let me down in 2 years of commuting between Sheffield and Leeds and averaged 50 mpg.
Very comfortable as well.

This is probably the nicest mk1 Mondeo I have seen possibly because it's sitting on my favourite Ford wheel.

That's lovely, look after it!

In fact, what is it like to drive? Can't be a bad car for a blat if they took it racing

I know where one of the 300 went. It caught fire as I was driving it, having owned it for 3 weeks. They go up quickly.

That looks to be a really really tidy example, I thought they all came out the factory with gaffa tape on the front bumper? hehe

Thanks for the comments! Wasn't sure anyone would be that interested so I hadn't bothered posting it before. To answer some of the questions it's black (Ford Jet Black) not aubergine, I paid about £400 for it 5 years ago, and I don't have any interior shots but will take some next time I get it out of the garage.

I had another one back in 2000 (an Si) and did almost a quarter of a million miles in 8 years. It never once let me down, never even missed a beat, in all weathers including deep snow. I didn't have to do anything other than routine maintenance and exhausts and rubber bushes. But the rust got hold of it and by the end it was really bad. Arches and fuel filler cap rotted right through, round the windscreen, everywhere. I sold it to a guy who wanted the 4x4 gear for a project for £350 and used that to buy this one. However this had only done around 80k miles and I've only taken it out in fair weather - Ford's from that era seem to hate salty roads!!

A couple of years ago I toyed with the idea of having an engine from a Focus RS fitted. Devil Developments in Surrey had done that exact conversion on another Mondeo 4x4 and giving it about 250bhp, but after thinking about it for a while I realised that for the same money I could buy an Audi S2 and keep the Mondeo standard (apart from the clear side indicators before anyone pulls me up on them!!). I hardly ever see any mk1's around now and those that I do always look a bit tired and with taped up bumpers!

I have no idea what it's worth, probably not a lot for an 18 year old Mondeo, and it's a shame Ford never did a proper RS version or something like the ST200 for the Mk1. But I love the thing and have an odd emotional attachment to it laugh

That is absolutely lovely, I am a real fan of the Mk1 Mondeo with the RS kit. Personally I preferred the Si spec to the Ghia, but yours will have much more kit.

Only thing that I think lets it down is the TD rad grille, is there a story there?

Regardless, utterly lovely to see such a rare car in such nice condition, well done!

Ahhhhh!! Funny you should ask that as I thought the Ghia came with a chrome surround grille, but the RS kit usually came with an oval grille. I wasn't sure where this one was from but you've solved it!

I don't know why it's different. markp1973 might be able to answer that if he sees this thread. If it isn't the standard one I'll get an original replacement. Can't be that much to buy now. What is becoming a problem is 4x4 specific spares such as ABS wheel sensors etc. Ford stopped making parts long ago and if they're not in stock anywhere I have to wait for Ebay!!

Amazing to think this shape was once everywhere yet I can't remember the last time I saw one. I always liked the slightly "hot" versions of these, the first really good ford for a while if I remember correctly and a lead in to the focus/pums/fiesta cars establishing themselves as benchmarks for normal front wheel drive cars.

Yours looks like a nice example, and I like the wheels. Do you notice the 4x4?

As standard this would have had the standard petrol Mondeo semi-oval grille; the chrome Ghia one came later, I think the same time that the side repeaters moved down to be in line with the side moulding (secret Ford geek!)

Another one of those cars rapidly disappearing from the streets of the uk. Looks to be in lovely condition.

I was a Fleet Manager when they launched the Mondeo in the UK, had about a third of my 300 car fleet at one point in Mondeos, always drove much nicer than the Cavalier and 405's we also run.

Had a load of early K plates as well. Really reliable and comfy.

Much sturdier than the eggshell spec bumpered MK2 that replaced it.

Looking forward to updates on this one.

Great car in fantastic condition.

I too remember the documentary where they travelled to cold climates for some sort of test. I recall that all the Mondeo's featured in the show had number plates K1 FMC, K2 FMC and so on. Perhaps two or three years ago I saw K8 FMC on a Mondeo in Liverpool being used as a private hire car.

The original Mondeo was an attractive car and a million miles ahead of the Sierra IMO.
