Cold air arrives on Weds - first frost of the year likely for most inland places.

Amusingly it's Netweather who are forecasting the frost - but not their computers wink

Not unusual, no - but it will be quite a shock as autumn has hardly started in terms of weather.

Missed this thread, glad it's that time of year to start talking about the Snowmageddon that we all know in our heart of hearts won't come.

Quick question: I've thoroughly enjoyed the stabs people have made at attempting to explain why we get the weather we do, and a few articles elsewhere. Can anyone recommend a decent book (preferably on Kindle) that's entertaining/interesting?
Start with today's BBC article hehe

So Puggit do you have a rough prediction for the 1st snow day yet, last time you were pretty accurate (you will not be held to it as it is very early on)
Nothing on the horizon yet - but the rest of October will be much colder than we've been used to and likely to be colder than average. Will be quite a shock.

Some mountain snow due in the next few days in Scotland.

Here's the reason for the incoming cold air. This is a chart of Thursday's jet stream:

What's the scale?
Says at the top, mph. But it's high up in the atmosphere. Blizzards in Iceland tonight apparently.

Nice to know the Icelandics get caught out too: http://www.icelandreview.com/icelandreview/daily_n...

Interesting early falls of snow on the US plains and in central Europe. I'm still hoping, but obviously that Express article can be filed along with the same article for the last x years...

Not strictly winter weather but a tornado caused damage in Hayling Island this morning and another storm is heading for the Dorset/Hants coast which could spawn further tornados and flooding.

Beware!

What is the general feeling around this winter? I know it's too early to tell with any decent measure of accuracy, but something tells me it's going to be mild and damp (good for the heating bills but boring)

We've had 2 cold winters but I've no idea if that sets a pattern or means we are due a mild one?

You can find whatever long term forecast you're looking for at the moment. Certainly the mid term is warm and unsettled.

Some interesting charts showing lots of high pressure surrounding the North Pole, and locking the cold in. At some point, that cold has to spill out, but where will it go? hehe

Thunderstorms and even tornados possible again from lunch onwards along the coast West of Hampshire and inland in to Wilts and West Berks.

Another really miserable day ahead
