I think El Niño type forecasting might fall more in to Schmalex's understanding, but my limited knowledge suggests an El Niño can lead to warmer temps in the Carribean - this could drive a stronger jet stream, and we all now understand what that means.
However, I think El Niño can also help create some high pressure systems over Europe. Leading to potential beasts from the East
