Then I saw he'd been outed as a Billy Bullstter and thought "So what? He's only having a laugh."

Then I read other things he'd posted and his replies to this and I now I think he needs some help. This doesn't sound like a guy having a laugh, he's a complete fantasist, living so apart from reality he barely knows what is real in his own life.

Sorry to disappoint you poppet, but I actually don't know where the 'telecoms' thing comes from. The specialty optical fibers with which I work / produce / test, can find their way into EDFA's and associated bits of telecoms kit, but the majority find their way into coils used in FOG's, which find uses in some very interesting applications. I do apologise for being 'normal' there for a bit. Wibble, potato.
