Surely the police arent stupid.. even if the idiots had taken the plates and fled, wouldn't the police would be able to use the VIN on the car to trace the owner? (Assuming the car is legit, as if it wasnt then they wouldnt bother removing the plates?)

They looked, and sounded, like foreign plates to me... Therefore actually tracing it by the VIN would be a non-starter.

It'll probably be some idiot who thinks they'll get done for going through a red light or similar. I seem to remember some discussion from long ago on the internet where people were discussing if you could get done for going in a bus lane/ running a red light/ etc with the cameras, and some idiots said they wouldn't risk it and would just wait if faced with the situation.
