Just chatting with friends, we came to discuss someone they knew who went to jail. It was for something serious too.

I was surprised, and then I realised - I don't really know anyone truly dodgy. No-one that's been to prison, should be in prison or is involved in something concerning. Or at least I don't know that I do. The worst is a friend that did community service after ebay things he "borrowed" from work. Hardly America's most wanted.

It sounds like I need to get out more doesn't it.

So, who's the dodgiest person you've known? Please enlighten my naive and squeaky clean outlook.

Someone I used to work with did time for attempted murder. He was a bit of a tt though. Another lad I know well did time for drink driving. After 18 pints the fact he made it out the pub car park was amazing!

An acquaintance (25 years dead) sold hard drugs in Manchester. The drugs came in from Ireland. The profits from selling the drugs went towards buying guns, semtex etc. Guess what group of nice young men were fronting him the drugs? Needless to say he never missed a payment.

One very good mate has done time for blackmail (got ripped off in a business deal and tried the wrong way to sort it out)

An acquaintance has done time for demanding money with menaces ( protection racket) he has suggested whilst very drunk involvement in murder.

Another acquaintance will be getting done for approx 12 murders sometime soon.

Various other people I know are guilty of similar serious offences.

And seemingly a member of the Mafia in our midst.

A former colleague was tried for funding terrorism and exciting terrorism abroad. How on this earth he got found not guilty we will never know.

I guy who was my best mate and next door neighbour as kids went to Thailand and sold arms to dodgy foreign governments. Proper arms too like tanks, helicopter gunships, RPGs by the tanker load and the like. He's still a close mate now he's back but he did spend a few years moving round the country as his "boss" didn't take kindly to him leaving.

He lives the Life of Reilly nowadays. Hasn't worked since his early 30s and never will need or want to again.

Some cracking stories, including one that makes The Hangover tiger story look positively tame. He bought a cub in a bar, although it was pretty well grown. The following day the drugs used to sedate it had obviously worn off and he returned to his flat to find his housekeeper bleeding a lot and a chunk of her leg missing.

I once knew a guy who stole a Kendal mint cake from a gift shop in a stately home.

True story.

I know a bloke who killed someone. Was reduced to manslaughter. He's out now. Good guy. Played football with him.

There are many others that I won't even allude to, for the simple reason that they are friends and/or business acquaintances of mine or my familys, but they are very serious people.

And one of my closest relatives was recently facing 7 firearms offences and 2 counts of assault.

Oh and there's another fella, a Cypriot, who has diplomatic immunity and has received calls from government ministers while in our company on a night out.

Other than that, no-one really...

A guy I knew was to my mind a bit slippery in business & consequently I avoided dealing with him. Turns out one of his businesses disposing of unwanted human body parts from the NHS hit upon the novel cost saving idea of leaving them in a trailer on an industrial estate.

He got on the news for that & went to jail for a few years.

I did a load of work for a guy, shifting beer from one warehouse to another. Run of the mill stuff but it turns out the loads were marked for export & thus duty free, but were routed domestically & turning a good few quid. I only found out about that when customs turned up at my door. Not happy about that one bit & afaik my old customer is on bail sans passport.

I know a particularly aggressive football hooligan who travels away with his local club just to attend the scraps. He does the same with England and a notorious Eastern European club.

6 foot 5 and 22 stone of flab, muscle, tattoos and anger.

I know someone who did 4 and a half years in 9 different prisons in the USA.

I wouldn't say he was dodgy though.

My life has been a bit sheltered but I a bloke I knew years ago who was a bit of a joke Arthur Daley - cockney accent, gold Rolls Shadow, lock-up flogging water damaged umbrellas, second hand tiles and the usual dodgy dealer stuff.

Anyhoo it turned out that he had a cannabis farm out in the sticks then was jailed for trying to blackmail Cadburys by poisoning chocolate bars.

The husband of an aquaintance was jailed for possessing child porn, nobody suspected anything but he actually looked like a stereotypical pervert - thick glasses, bushy beard etc.

Trying to keep this as unidentifiable as possible but a relative of my wife is married to a bloke who "works" 3 hours a day window cleaning. his wife does 20hrs a week ish cleaning
They got married in vegas, they have a nice house, eat out regularly buy stuff for the grandkids etc.
His family are notorious locally for being involved in most of the crime, he always claims not to be involved.
When I mentioned in passing who she was marrying my dad cringed a bit, did the sharp intake of breath and told me to be careful what I did/said around him as my dad knew his dad back in the 60s and he was "a bad un" think a yorkshire version of the Krays

My Father in laws cousin was jailed as he was a member of krays gang. Got caught trying to intimidate the jury.

I had a mate at school who was a nutter. He worked undercover in Ireland during the troubles, married an irish lass and then sort of went native. He came back to the UK and I bumped into him, he told me that he was going to be rich soon.

A few weeks later he was caught doing an armed robbery and did 10 years on Armly jail.

To be honest he is a pretty decent guy to talk to, pleasant company but there is always the little thing in the back of my head wondering where all the cash comes from....
