Most people don't notice, in fact most Brits don't even know what their flag should look like. This would never happen to the U.S. Stars and Stripes but seems to be perfectly fine to do it to the Union Flag; It's worse than the more common symmetrical version. If so, I don’t think it is - It would be wrong if the pole was attached on the left but if it was attached on the right, it would be correct (I think!)

Was just writing a comment that the red diagonals on the original post didn’t line up and looked at your correct specification and… they don’t! I’ve literally never noticed this, despite having learnt years ago that the wider white bars go at the top by the flag pole. Obvious really because couldn’t be both but never seen it.
On PH, every day is a school day…

It's the equivalent of doing this...

(but I also thought the union jack was only considered 'upside down' once on a flagpole??)

The primary side of a flag is pole on the left. It's really only reversed when physically displayed on the right side of a vehicle or uniform where the "pole" is to the front, and the flag flies to the rear.

Which always looks wrong to me, even though I know it is correct. It's the equivalent of doing this...

Important: the Union Flag has a correct way up – in the half of the flag nearest the flagpole, the wider diagonal white stripe must be above the red diagonal stripe, as Scotland's St Andrew's Cross takes precedence over Ireland's St Patrick's Cross.
It is most improper to fly the flag upside down.
..... and if seen upside down on a naval ship ....... it is a sign of distress.....

N.B. The Union Jack will become a lot simpler once Scotland and Northern Ireland leave
Maybe we could incorporate a little dragon for Wales?Scotland will go the same.
NI will be 'supported' by Ireland.
