Cold calling is a valid and ethical way of generating business, you know - the stuff that makes the economy work and produces the money that buys nice things like cars.
A polite "no" followed by putting the phone down is all you need to do if you are not interested. Making an already tough job tougher by playing tricks on the caller is a bit unfair in my opinion.

No it isn't valid at all. For many recipients it is harassing, distressing, frightening, rude, and in many cases illegal.A polite "no" followed by putting the phone down is all you need to do if you are not interested. Cold callers are quite frankly, the scum of the earth.

Mainly though I find it rude to drag me to the phone away from what I was doing to listen to a spiel about something I have no intention of buying, like chuggers, they may be legal but they shouldn't be.

The thing I don't like about cold calling is exactly what it is...... I run a business and I advertise - if people want my services they call me. I don't call people who may or may not want my services, and I don't want others to do it. If I want their service I will call them. In fact by cold calling me or knocking on the door they are off my list of suppliers immediately.
A small story... Whilst building an extension I required windows and french doors. Conversation when I rang a large double glazing co went "I want one window 1.8m x 1.3m , one 1.8m x 1.5m French windows 1.5m and details etc." Glazing co "we'll have to come around and measure" me "no point as bricks aren't in place yet, but those are the sizes, exact measurement can be made once the bricks are in place, but I just want a ball-park figure" Glazing co. " can't do as we need to measure..... me " but you must know how much for a window this x this" No we don't. Bizarre.
Local small independent gave a ball-park figure, then when ready measured, supplied and was even a bit cheaper than their original figure - There's a moral there.

And I confidently expect that if you had allowed them to come and 'measure' they would have insisted on both you and your spouse being there at the time.A small story... Slightly different but I used to get a lot of wrong numbers because my old house telephone number was 1 digit different to the job centre it went on for years!! It was about the time mobile phones became affordable so house phone was redundant apart from these callers
But it was so funny winding the rude callers up 😂😂 they would often not have their dole money in their account and be quite pissed off and rude as soon as the phone was picked up, you'd let them rant then say how terrible it was and that they have dialled the wrong number and hang up, phone rings again immediately, answer rant rant rant when they finish tell them to not use redial.
Or take details and say wait by the phone as I'll call you back.

I've got one of those BT phones that diverts all classes of call that I choose (e.g. number withheld, international, etc.) to the answer phone.
Best £50 I ever spent. If the phone rings you can pretty much guarantee it's someone I want to ring me.
this a million times. We got our line and the only company that got it was admiral car inusrarnce when I took out a new policy with them. Less than a week later they started. All automated so no way of venting on them.Best £50 I ever spent. If the phone rings you can pretty much guarantee it's someone I want to ring me.
bought one of those and all is fine.

In our household, the only reason we have a landline is for the broadband connection. We don't live in a cable area, if we did (like I did a few years ago) we would just have cable internet and no landline phone.
We all have mobiles and leave the landline connected for emergencies and 0800 dialling out numbers, but the ringer has been disabled. My mobile has an app which diverts all calls that are not recognized to the voicemail so I have a relatively cold-call free life.
We used to use the landline, however like most people we got endless cold calls and nothing else regardless of having TPS registration. I personally think that landlines will soon become redundant for the home.

If it's a lady that calls I let her start her sales pitch,I'll interrupt her and ask if she minds me being naked whilst on the phone, I'll let her carry on then I'll ask her if she minds me being in a state of arousal, I'll then let her carry on, I'll make slight moaning noises then ask her what colour underwear she's wearing. There's always a click of me getting cut off and I never get to know
What pisses me off the most is the bloody text messaging, I've had them in the early hours of the morning, I reply and when they phone me I growl at the supervisor/manager.

It's business that makes the economy work, not cold calling. Most, in fact virtually all, businesses manage to function without ever pestering people on their home phones night after night.A polite "no" followed by putting the phone down is all you need to do if you are not interested. These bds don't take 'no' for an answer.
