If it's an actual power distribution company being out that late it's usually something like a mains cable fault that they've either traced to that location and are investigating it or are digging it up to fix, doubt they'd be round to just be wiring up his garage for some new overhead strip lighting.
Installing a new mains supply for the doomsday device the neighbour is building?

Just for humour mention to him that his electrical issue caused you some parking issues. Explain how it inconvenienced you and say it was really annoying to other residents too. Do it with a straight face

The annoying couple who live in the bottom corner of our cul-de-sac had 4 UK Power Networks vans parked up in all the residents spaces along our road last night and on the verges/yellow lines last night, until past 11pm, doing something in their garage, but I don't know what really.. I didn't think UKPN were in the business of dealing with domestic matters that could surely be done by one man between reasonable hours of say 8am-6pm?
So you're blaming your neighbour for where UKPN park their vans? And he's the odd one?

Should be lucky they were in spaces and not blocking the road as they do round here.

I'm blaming him yes, for having some such demand that necessitated 4 such vans (one of which had a trailer with a mini digger on the back) to park all around the end of our cul de sac from sometime before 5pm when I got home and couldn't park in my road until 11.30pm. All the power was on in the road and his house, and yet, this same neighbour complains frequently about people having their own legitimate use of their private driveways, but not see what he's created as any kind of problem as it didn't affect him. None of the UK PN vans parked in HIS driveway, of course

The entitlement is strong hehe just kidding.

As someone who works on the Highway a lot, I regularly have gangs parking along a road taking up (permit) spaces or other parking spaces. If the guys have tools etc, it's a bit unfair to ask them to lug them up and down a road, or track a machine along a road, just because locals are upset about (public) parking spaces being used. Easier for you to park 100 yards away and walk once, than for them to park 100 yards away and have a dozen trips backwards and forwards with breakers, reinstatement materials etc.

If you really want to get irritated, you should be aware how much of your council tax goes to UKPN whenever they dig up a road in advance of road improvement works...

4 vans in total - Lets assume 2 on verges as you state the plural and 1 on yellow lines, may I ask how do you arrive at "vans parked up in all the residents spaces along our road"?

I should have said in all of the "available" spaces

There's six spaces, three had usual residents in, the other three were taken up by their van with a digger trailer on the back. Now usually, I could park up on the verge, or temporarily on the lines - because the parking wardens will only come around during the active hours of the permit scheme (10am-noon) and then move later. But with all their vans in the way, this wasn't feasible.

Might be one for the "things which annoy you" thread but I feel I am within reason to be annoyed by this, given the history with this one guy and his wife.

If I got home from work to find I was off supply with a service cable fault (which is more or less the only reason they'd be there at that time), I'd not be waiting until the next day to report it just to keep my neighbours happy. And you say he's the odd one?

Sounds like you got away lightly. Last time we had a supply cable fault locally we had no power for 9 hours and at least 8 vehicles in attendance for the duration.

Fault was traced to a damaged cable under a neighbours block-paved driveway, which had to be lifted to fix the fault. Not the first time they've had their driveway lifted, it was a damaged gas mains AND power cable previously.

Although one case mentioned in that article was "teacher Alex Young" who complains when fined for storing bins completely off her property:

"She has nowhere to put the solitary bin other than on the raised concrete area behind her terraced house" - pretty sure that's complete BS!

Did we ever get an update about the mystery hermit neighbour who had CID poking round his garden and sneaking into his house?

The neighbours wife is Polish, he lived there for a while, so knows the language.

Yesterday morning an argument starts between them, he starts out in English, she's arguing back in Polish. He then starts arguing back in Polish, and they carry on the row for a good 10 minutes. The argument then ends with a swift 'fk OFF' from her.

It was very amusing.

Random English phrases inserted into conversations held in another language always reminds me of: "eth eth eth eth eth, Chris Waddle"

It was a bit of a revelation to me as a child that the Indian Language seemed to be missing lots of words so they just used the English word for stuff.

I was at a mates house and his parents were talking in Indian but i would pick out the odd word like 'battery' and 'microwave' and Remote control.

Makes more sense than what the Welsh do, which is to just make words up; microwave = popty-ping.

(That's not actually true.)
