Odd things your neighbours do?

Hmm, flags on cars are just a bit of fun, there's no need to see them as anything other than that, especially if a big tournament's on. I stuck a couple to the roll bar of my Tiger a couple of years ago - people just laughed, so did I. The kids hung flags from their bedroom windows, we put one up at work. No harm done, they all disappeared as soon as England were knocked out (yeah, yeah, I know the jokes).
I think some people just try too hard to be offended.
I'm not in any way offended by a flag - just has negative connotations for me.I think some people just try too hard to be offended.

couple of years back we got overtaken by some guys in a l200 pickup with a plastic england flag over their bonnet / grill
10 or so mins down the road, they were overheating, felt a bit sorry for them really
Similar story... A30 between Basingstoke and Camberley, driving along, got overtaken by a Rover 200 like a bat out of hell.10 or so mins down the road, they were overheating, felt a bit sorry for them really
5 minutes later, rounded a bend, man was in the road waving for me to slow down, as I came around the corner, there was previously seen Rover 200 on its roof, with all the passengers on the side of the road looking very sheepish.
I did not laugh at all...

i'm not saying it's right, but in most non-flag-flyers' eyes, the flag has more negative connotations that spring right into mind before simply supporting a sporting team or being a bit proud to be English. People that don't see themselves as 'the bad ones' get a bit angry at the idea, but that doesn't change anything. They might well be flying the flag for what they see as good reasons, but most other people will look at their plastic flagged car and think "chav", their England shirt and expect to get glassed any second, their tattoo and think "EDL" and their house banner and think "fk i've taken a wrong turn, best high-tail it before i get carjacked".
The philtrum moustache is a perfectly good moustache - but guess what, if you shave one onto your face people will think you're trying to look like Hitler. Unfortunately there is nothing you can do about it. If you choose to wear the moustache, people are going to think you're a neo-Nazi. You might fking love that moustache, but it's a choice you make and it's not other peoples' fault.
[I'm not saying that because I think England flag flyers are neo-Nazis so fk off before you even say it, it's an unrelated example]

I would rarely agree with Blown2CV, but I do now. Draping an English flag from your windows or Blu Taking it to your wall doesn't look good. The philtrum moustache is a perfectly good moustache - but guess what, if you shave one onto your face people will think you're trying to look like Hitler. It's not good that that is the case, but it is. It's also quite unsightly (not that most modern builds are beautiful).
If it's flown from a flagpole it is reasonable. There is nothing wrong in being glad to be from England. However there is no reason to display it (particularly in England as most people in England are from England).

I think that this is possibly the differentiator. The whacking great 4mx6m flag nail gunned to the side of a house with text is unlikely to belong to the sort who understands the history of the flag and the country.
Bit like those who trot out the "St George wasn't even English you know" line. Well fk me sideways. Next you'll be telling me that there are no dragons!

Of course there are no dragons. St George killed them all!

It's a real shame that thesis playing of the flag of st George gas become synonymous with mouth breathing knuckle draggers generally speaking.

Perhaps what we need in this country is a National Day?
People could display the flags on that day then remove them after?
I find it sad that our national flag gets labeled with Football,(I hate football). According to some of the papers, the bloke that displayed those bloody great England flags put them up for the World cup. He was not a Voter FOR ANY PARTY (according to the papers).
Im all for flags being displayed, I love the USA for this, many Neighborhoods display flags over there, but and here's the difference, they are displayed tastefully, not stuck up on soffit boards blocking out your windows, I have a house near me where a big CHP Football flag is hung below their bedroom front window. Looks absolutely crap and as far as I'm concerned its another thing that brings down the look of the road.
If however there was a proper wall pole fixing with a small flag on it, it would look much better. Nothing wrong in having a passion but clearly some have no idea on what looks nice and what looks crap, and sadly many people have no thought for their Neighbours either
Not that I know, but are there any Neighbourhood bye laws relating to such issues? IE how long something can be displayed etc? I know there are laws about other structures such as Satellite dishes etc, Anything for flags?
And for the record I do have a Van

St George's Day There are no flags where I live either on houses or cars, and I am sure there is no less feeling of genuine Englishness, but quite possibly it isn't the same Englishness felt in the council estates.
Anyway back to your fking weird neighbours!!

One of my neighbors walks his cat, not on a lead he just wanders along the pavement next to it every day. I thought maybe it wouldn't go out on it's own but when it died he got another and still walks it.
He's probably a model, if you know what I mean, doing his little turn on the catwalk.Gassing Station | The Lounge | Top of Page | What's New | My Stuff
