Why not stir up a bit of st and contact the company he works for?

Explain the situation - they might just have a word with him
Don't do this. It's a tttish move.
As someone who used to work for a company that had liveried vans that occasionally had 'complaints' reported by either people with nothing better to do or a tenuous grasp on the Highway Code, you may well find you are ignored anyway.
Can you imagine?!

"Yes, hello"?
"I'd like to complain about one of your vans"
"Ok, go ahead"
"Well, it's parked where I can see it"
"Um, OK. Is it blocking anybody in?"
"No."
"So is it in anybody's way?"
"No."
"Is it on somebody else's land?"
"No."
"So what exactly is the problem?"
"Errr...well, I can see it. From my window."
<brrrrrrrr>
I am absolutely, positively, 100% *not* going to do that. smile

I don't want to belittle your feelings, as it is obvious from your post that you are finding it difficult to live with this situation at present.

However, it's not much of a "view" to get annoyed about. Without the van in the way you're left with about fifty feet of grass and then the side of another house.

It's not exactly the Matterhorn, or the Amazon delta.

I suggest that you invest in one of these. It will promote neighbourly harmony and save you from a lot of grief and heartache, in the long run.

I posted similar (the Alps or lake Como IIRC) a while ago TBH but what the view is of misses the point. That area, when complete, will be a grassy area with a few trees, ideal for kids to play in for *all* the neighbours to get together etc.
That picture is from a while ago, at the moment it’s soil and weeds and the kids love playing there after they get home from school. They can dig it up, pile up stones or twigs whatever they like. It’s great for them even now. And I’m happy to let them play there. When I’m working I’ll be able to see them from the office. At the weekend me and Mrs Hackney can sit in the garden, we plan a bench, and watch them play while we relax.
A bit of freedom for them but safe enough.

So, yes I realise I can’t see the Matterhorn. But I can see my kids play which, with due respect to the Matterhorn, is a great view for me.

But there’s a van.

And to try and answer everyone who (still) thinks I’m being the odd neighbour or being unreasonable, I asked the neighbour if he’d mind parking his van in one of his two perfectly adequate, very convenient parking spaces right by his front door instead. Not all the time,

You may recall one of his reasons / excuses was that it was difficult to get in and out of his two spaces when two cars were parked there. Having a vehicle parked in the turning space means they have to reverse down the whole road and back out into the adjoining road to move off. Which, I would’ve thought, is more difficult.

There is probably nothing I could do legally. And I would be VERY reluctant to get into a legal dispute over anything with a neighbour. I was asking, courteously as possible because I realise I’m asking for a favour.
If the situation were reversed (well, I wouldn’t need to be asked because I wouldn’t even be parking there, but) I wouldn’t hesitate to help and / or compromise on this instead of offering up the reasons I was given.

Would this sort of thing help?

I'm not suggesting you cover his van. Offer to go 1/2s, let him do his bit, the side that faces your window, then play the delaying game on your 1/2 and see how it goes.

Maximum result minimum effort. You never know, if the landscaping doesn't take place to your liking you may be glad.

I know our hero is imagines gazing at a woodland wilderness idyll opposite his parking spot. Bluebells in the spring, kiddies playing poo sticks, discovering grass snakes and newts, constructing wigwams from brash, rabbits, hares, hedgehogs, a owl, maybe even bambi grazing on a grassy glade.

I really hope it comes off.

I see you’re making a joke. Fair enough.
Well, I hope it’s a joke because it’s a bloody useless solution to my issue. Camouflaging something doesn’t render it transparent.
What I need is a Klingon bird of prey cloaking technology.

There’s a view of nothing whatsoever. The van enhances the view of a pile of generic new builds

Best bet is to hope for the van driver to change companies and get a massive Luton with a picture of Volvic water gushing down a mountainside.

Sorry mate: first world problems. I’ve had to work from home since last year. I couldn’t care less what’s outside my windows: I’m too busy working.

Whilst I agree Hackney is being unrealistic with his expectations of the parking situation on new builds, it's also very apparent most people commenting/criticizing haven't actually bothered to read his reasons why it frustrates him...

I have some sympathy for the (OP} in this situation. If I've understood it correctly the guy is parking the van in a communal turning area, not on a part of his own property, basically he is taking advantage of the situation even though his property has two parking spaces.

Is it much different to the other threads on PistonHeads where someone parks their car on the road outside your house even though they have a perfectly good drive?

It just seems to be a regular situation with vans. The owners don’t want them parked on their own drives as it looks council. But they also don’t have consideration for others.

May I refer you to my post of 13:23 this afternoon where I (once again) made clear that it’s not about a view in the panoramic vista sense of the word, and it’s not about making the van better to look at with an effing volvic ad, but of a small piece of land where my children might play.

And actually I do care what’s outside the window. I’m very sorry your job sucks.

I get where you are coming from but surely it won’t be very relaxing having to watch your young kids play next to a turning point. I am presuming If the van is not parked there it will be used for turning by the van owner or others.

Has these new builds no gardens you can sit out the back and allow the kids to play safely ?

No you’ve completely misunderstood, the guy is parking his van on his own drive. His neighbour owns the land under the van. it provides no access to anyone else. Unfortunately Hackney has bought his house for the view of his children playing in a communal area and would politely expect the neighbour to park elsewhere on his drive.

I’m probably being thick, but if this is the view from your office that you are so upset about, unless your children are directly behind the van, how is your view obscured?

Although

On the new build estate next to us, the back gardens are pretty much postage stamps. When one house has to have the trampoline and paddling pool out on their drive, you know it's just ridiculous!

The plans of the estate have been shared a couple of pages back.

Are you seriously suggesting putting dog st on part of someone else’s drive so they park on a part of their drive you would prefer?

I’m starting to be very grateful for my neighbours.

You’re not being thick you just haven’t read the original post.
The picture was taken from the first floor, my office is on the ground floor. And it’s not just when I’m in the office, it’s when using the front garden.
I don’t really mind the van being parked there when I’m working and / or when the kids are in school.
