I did hatchet throwing last Saturday and the set up was exactly the same. We didn’t get any ricochets like that though. Surprisingly, 90% of the people there were female.

I also did it a few months ago and it was quite fun. Richocets did cross my mind, but thankfully my mind was kept axe free as was all the other guests.

This was in North Carolina, next to a gun range so the axes looked quite tame in comparison to some of the weapons.

funnily enough I did axe/hatchet throwing in Jan as well - loved it! When we move I can see a decent sized tree stump to be used for this purpose!!

I guess vaguely hitting the target rather than the rubber floor mat first might go some way to preventing a ricochet like that.

Ive seen them before with a sand pit in front. Seems to make a lot more sense to me!
