it's quite incredible that first cousin weddings are allowed, it is all about money is it not?

What on earth is that type of ward?

If people want to have arranged marriages then have at it - they believe it works. The whole cousin thing is just, I dunno, little-empirism. I can see the logic behind it and it obviously predates the science of genetics but it has the scope to obliterate what it's for. I guess it wasn't much of a problem when the problem could be disposed of in more backward times and places....
You can see the logic? what about the logic of children being born with disabilities, backwards medieval practice to keep money in the family, it should be outlawed as it is child abuse

We're friendly with a couple who live in our village.

In their late sixties, they're very Home Counties. He was in the Household Cavalry, she was a headmistress. They told us that they've been married for forty years or more.

They're also first cousins. Their mothers were sisters. They chose not to have children.

Not sure of the accuracy of this, but apparently Bradford Royal was one of the first hospitals to have an incest ward of a maternity wing.
So why bother posting?

Did you not think something like that sounds a bit stupid?

Just for the simple of thinking, Bradford Royal Infirmary, doesn't have a incest ward (it never has)*

It would appear that the NHS is using Bradford as a study into consanguinity.

Arranged marriage is one thing, procreating with the genetically similar so causing a higher incidence of birth defects is another..... Not all arranged marriages are between cousins. In defying science, those who arrange marriages between cousins are risking what they're trying to protect.

I think the problem is not so much that people are marrying their first cousins but that all too often their parents are also first cousins.

There is no objection to marrying cousins in Islam, except al-maharim. The relevant part in the Qur'an if interested is the 4th chapter about the womens, namely verse 23 Surah An-Nisa.

Rough translation into Engrish speak :

"Prohibited to you [for marriage] are your mothers, your daughters, your sisters, your father's sisters, your mother's sisters, your brother's daughters, your sister's daughters, your [milk] mothers who nursed you, your sisters through nursing, your wives' mothers, and your step-daughters under your guardianship [born] of your wives unto whom you have gone in. But if you have not gone in unto them, there is no sin upon you. And [also prohibited are] the wives of your sons who are from your [own] loins, and that you take [in marriage] two sisters simultaneously, except for what has already occurred. Indeed, Allah is ever Forgiving and Merciful."

ie. marrying and having sex with cousins is quite cool in Islam and not frowned upon whatsoever. yuck

Is it frowned upon in other religions?

Well it does say "your brother's daughters" and "your sister's daughters".

I note that the list purely tells men which women/girls they can marry, there is no element of giving the women any advice/say. But then this is also the religion whose founder/prophet married a six-year-old girl... As Wikipedia says: "A preponderance of classical sources converge on Aisha being 6 or 7 years old at the time of her marriage, and 9 at the consummation."
