It's used to infer humour in text rather than literally meaning Laugh Out Loud these days.
"You're a fking idiot" and "You're a fking idiot, lol" represent an offensive insult and a ribbing you give your mate for mucking something up.
It's the same as smilies / emoticons, they are a way of inferring an emotion into what you're saying.
