THE Winter jacket recommendations
Discussion
My default answer these days is Arc'teryx. Assuming their stuff fits you nicely (tend to be 'athletic' cut), then it's awesome.
I bought a down gilet a couple of years ago and now have 2 gore-tex jackets, the gilet, a mid-layer or two, t-shirts, climbing harness.........
Excellent quality gear, VERY well thought out details on every item I own and excellent customer service. I'm a bit addicted! I also rate Rab highly, they are another company with great customer service as well as excellent gear.
My go-to gore-tex shell is a Beta AR jacket. I have an Atom LT hoody midlayer which I also wear without the shell and as an outer layer when ski-touring with a skiing specific shell when necessary. Down gilet for about town warmth (packs into a fist sized bag). I alternate the midlayer with a Rab merino-lined fleece. If it's properly cold, I have a Rab down jacket.
Oh and for base layer, anything merino and made in New Zealand

Thanks. Too warm is just what I'm looking for due to poor circulation when it gets chilly. I'm looking for an insulated jacket which doesn't make me look like the Michelin man
I've just got myself a Jack Wolfskin Halifax Parka and its great, not too puffy but nice and warm. You can take the fur off the hood too.DoctorX said:

For whoever posted that horrific Stone Island effort earlier Stone Island is worn by fat mid 40's chavs who think they're 'a bit handy' at the footy on a Saturday afternoom with their Adidas Gazelles, skinny jeans and Peaky Blinders caps. Canada Goose is just far too expensive and over the top for this country (and worn by footy chavs also)
I hate Stone Island with a passion, its right up there with Aquascrotum or whatever its called, its pricey so it makes me look rich innit.

It does have the unfortunate association with football wkers but have you actually looked into the type of processes and materials they have going into some of their jackets? Whether you like the look of them or not, there is some pretty impressive stuff there.
If you do look into it don't forget to have oasis playing in the background. I was in Copenhagen at the beginning of the year and I appeared not to fit in as a tourist as I didn't have a Canada goose coat. I'm impressed with offerings from Haglof but Rab I've been disappointed in the quality of their items. Most UK mountain rescue teams wear Keela and it's reasonably priced so if it's good enough for them....

All put to good use as 12 young men all stamp on a 50 year old bloke for wearing the wrong coloured shirt I'm sure. Rawwr said:
Really want to get this. I've put it in my basket and gone to the checkout so many times now without proceeding.
I finally weakened last Tuesday and ordered it. Arrived next day from their distribution centre in Belgium, which was quite impressive. Pretty sure it's not worth anywhere near the amount they're charging for it and it's definitely less substantial than its cheaper, furrier Chilliwack brother but it's a really nice cut, great materials and looks amazing to my admittedly slightly confused eyes.Rawwr said:

10 years ago maybe, the brands changed quite a bit in the last few years and is drawing a different customer base as the hooligan types arent impressed with the, judging by the brands facebook page, "all that gay hipster stuff" they make now.
Speaking from someone who follows their football team both home and away, this is still football chav wear by all the hooligan wannabes. You see plenty of it on match days so don't kid yourself it's not chav wear, it still is.Rip that stupid label patch off the sleeve and all is well, but that patch is the only reason people buy this clobber.

Has anyone been watching 'Artic Live?' The presenters are wearing Fjallraven and they look very nice.
I have two Fjällraven jackets. One for everyday use and one for when we are out in the mountains. Last year I used both for when we went to Longyearbyen on Svalbard last year with average temperatures of -25°c and below and not one was I cold, in fact the thing makes me sweat. An update from me from when I posted in October....
I never pulled the trigger on "the" winter coat that I really wanted as I couldn't justify spending £490 one it. Anyway, I'd been eyeing it up for months and last week I saw it reduced to £390 on a different website, in my size, last one in stock! I jumped on the chance and it arrived this morning. It's really mild today and I've quickly tried it on of course. I can confirm it is most definitely warm and oozes quality.

Removable fur trim is a bonus
