I'm drinking what can only be described as 'poof juice' but I'm ok with that.
Would anyone like a hug?

The one that says a car must have a valid MOT to transfer a numberplate away from it, thus royally screwing over anyone whos car fails an MOT with uneconomic work needed, but who wants to retain a cherished plate on it
There are ways of doing it if certain conditions are met. This is from PlateMaster's website:
If the donor vehicle’s tax and / or MOT has expired you can still sell your registration number provided all the following conditions apply at the time of the transfer application:-
•The tax expired within six months of the transfer application
•The MOT was valid at the time the tax expired
•You were the registered keeper of the vehicle at the time the tax expired
•The tax expired naturally, i.e., you didn’t apply for a refund
Note: If the MOT has expired, you can still sell your registration mark provided the road tax is valid at the time of the transfer application and that you were the registered keeper of the vehicle at the time the MOT expired.
Note: In all cases you will need to provide us with the MOT certificate, valid or expired.
So if you can sell it presumably you could transfer it.

The MOT expired in Feb '11, and the tax expired in March '12. So, the tax is out of the 6 month window. Do you need an MOT to buy tax for the car any more?

You probably wouldn't be able to buy tax but I've always found the DVLA fairly relaxed about this sort of thing. If can you put up a good case about an error with dates and they can see it clearly isn't fraud they welcome the revenue. It's a business now. It's a bit time consuming but if you persevere and manage to speak to someone they will talk you through the options. I'd be very surprised if they threw it out first try.

I'll certainly give it a try... How do you mean "an error with dates" though? It's a bit time consuming but if you persevere and manage to speak to someone they will talk you through the options. I'd be very surprised if they threw it out first try.

You quote the dates the MoT and tax ran out you just told us and say you're sorry, you made a mistake, you thought you were safe with the dates but have just found out they are outside the prescribed limits and is there anything that can be done, please? At that point you haven't identified yourself, the car or the plate.
They are there to help. It's not their job to try and catch you out.
