How about checks ? (I guess I'd better add a wink )

Not my Mrs 'thankfully!'..

Came back from a January Sales raiding conquest.. literally loaded to the teeth with bags of assorted tatt.. stuff they clearly didn't need.

She starts regaling her otherhalf / financier with stories of the amazing discounts shes hunted out, whilst holding the booty aloft.. His eyes start to roll in his head.. to which she retorts:

"Yes - but I've saved more than I've spent!!!"

Godbless you and your unfathomable logic - you and your kind will save the highstreet yet.

O.K., I’ll play, I wouldn’t take cheques in U.K., but I asked for the check after dinner in the U.S. laugh

I never understood how numberplate convention was so confusing.

SB's bird: "What's the numberplates this year?"
SB: "Well, what year is it?"
SB's bird: "2020"
SB: "So, the last two numbers first time round, then add 50 for the summer ones"
SB's bird: "We haven't reached 70 plates yet"
SB: "What's 69 + 1?"
SB's bird: "70"
SB: "So we have done"
SB's bird: "No that can't be right, it must be 50 plates"

Also reminded me, I've recently added a smart thermostat to the house. It's not quite KITT, but I've programmed it to respond to most stuff people say. Again, how is it that the ladies can work out stuff that nobody ever says and then complain the heating isn't going on?

For example - it's not hard to say, "hey Siri, set the heating to 17/18/19/20/21/22/23"

Nor did I think it was difficult to say "hey Siri, set the heating to timed"

I can't quite work out how she thought that a computer would understand "hey Siri, if it's too cold can you turn the heating on for an hour"

Siri condescendingly responded "it doesn't seem like it'll be all that cold. The temperature will have a high of 12 degrees, with a low of 4. It's likely to rain tomorrow."

She's in a huff because she went to bed and it was cold upstairs, when I asked her if she'd turned the heating on she said that it was the job of the house. confused

An extremely outdated, if a tad predictable try Nick, not guilty I’m afraid, first off, I never refused a CC in my life, my attitude was why should I care if I don’t get the dough until next month when it appears on my bank statement, I’m guaranteed to get it.
In addition, while most fares proffered a CC at the start of the trip, so that the card could be validated, many would not pull the card out until they got to their destination, among them many dozy bints who thought that maybe it could be validated by my just looking at it, WRONG, I had to swipe the card through a groove in the onboard monitor, this took 5, maybe 8 seconds, still not funny to those drivers behind, who’d seen her hop out at the lights and hand it through my window.
In closing, a plastic bag wouldn’t have worked in my taxi, my monitor/validator was linked to the meter, card swipe no worky, meter no worky, meter no worky, ergo no money coming in, never a good idea for a taxi driver.
Still, don’t give up sniping away, you throw ‘em at me, I’ll knock ‘em out of the park.
I was no angel out there, I did a few questionable things, if you can hit me with one, I’ll raise my hands in surrender, but I did the job right, I went anywhere that the public wanted, north, south, east, or west, and I took pounds, (UK, Scottish, and N Irish), dollars, euros, debit and credit cards, but not cheques.
Don't worry Frank, I took a black cab a couple of times last week for the first time in ages and both happily accepted card. It did cost me £2 more than the same journey would have in an Uber but the Uber we needed was at least 17 minutes away.

In my job I speak to a lot of main dealers and many of them don't get it. Ordering cars last June for September delivery, and checking they'll be on a 69 plate, and a few said "dunno, I need to check what number they're using from September!"

I think there was a news item recently saying registrations were down in the last few months, I wonder if that's due to Brexit or because people don't want 69 on the bonnet and will wait for March?

Especially the way that you've tried to explain it. SB's mistake was thinking she wanted a lesson, when all she wanted was an answer.

If I annwered one of my wife's questions in such a condescending manner, I'd get a punch in the throat. And I'd deserve it.

Easier when the letter indicated the age. My old Mk 1 Cortina was KUY 176D meaning it was 1966

confused

Immediately after which, the letter stopped indicating the age, as the registration year went from January to August.

Unless you know the years for each letter, in which case they always did indicate the age, as does the current system.

I'd never really thought about how much notice I took of plates until I moved somewhere that doesn't have such an obvious system to identify the age from the plate biggrin

To be fair I don't even look at plates these days. If I am looking at buying a car the age will be in the advert.

And they never change the tax brackets to start on the same day as a new registration either, which is relevant to some people.

But yes, I don't think anyhwere other than mainland UK (and Rep. Ireland?) make it possible to determine the age of the car by the registration plate?

That's the other thing my car predates the modern tax brackets so I pay £265.00 a year

I don't even mean when I want/need to know the age, there appears to be a subconscious thing that I usually know roughly how old a car is when I look at one in the UK, and I hadn't even realised I was doing it until I moved to the NL biggrin

It's a force of habit for me to look at reg' plates of British cars in films and TV from the '60s, '70s and '80s etc, the year / changeover system we have is somehow etched into the old grey cells. E suffix Mk1 Mini in The Saint...? Must be a Jan 1st to July 31st job.... J suffix Rover in The Persuaders...? Must be a 1st August '70 to July 31st 1971 job. Probably an age thing, I'm 54 and always remember the fuss and excitement as a nipper over relatives getting their new plate on 1st August.

Me too, and it means I annoy my wife when I point out cars that weren't registered until two years after the programme in which they are is set
