London, Primrose Hill. Genuine village feel despite being a 10 min cab ride or 40 min walk through Regents Park to Oxford Street. Inhabitants are very understated despite it's reputation, no through roads so minimal traffic, none of the big chains on the high street. Can be at everything that London has to offer within 15 mins but can also be outside London and walking around a 5000 acre National Trust estate in 40 mins. Can be on the M1 in 10 minutes and be at of Heathrow, Luton, Stanstead etc inside an hour.

Loved living in the area for the last twenty years but sadly that comes to an end this summer when we move out of London to Bucks. Wouldn't live anywhere else in London.
Primrose Hill is fab. But it's very expensive, even by London standards.
Yes it is but compared to say Notting Hill it looks like decent value!

I'm in West Berkshire out in the countryside. It's not my/our ideal location (that'd be GetCarter's!), but I don't have my ideal job (that'd be GetCarter's too!!.
Good plan!

I lived for 30 years in London: Harrow, Camden, West Hampstead, Southgate, North Finchley, Cockfosters, Barnet, Wood Green, Islington, Hampstead, then dodgy Essex, piss poor Reading, then rural Berkshire, then Oxfordshire, then the nutter Cotswolds, then the best bit of the Lake District (by far), and now here.

I'm running out of north! It gets better the further I get away from London!

Outskirts of Middlesbrough, 15 mins to the coast and the Cleveland Hills are on the doorstep. Short drive to North Yorkshire moors, 1½ hours to the Lake District, 1 hour to Newcastle or York. 7 mile commute is normally about 15 mins.
Town gets some very bad press, but it's mostly undeserved
Can't complain !

I live in the Lakes in the West not far inside the national park boundary. As it's relatively isolated even at the height of summer there aren't many tourists kicking around so the road and fells remain pretty quiet so is a world away from places like Windermere, Ambleside and Keswick.

I'm not a city person although I like visiting them. Living in the area does have it's draw backs but if you're into what makes them great, namely outdoor pursuits and great driving roads-I have a motorbike too. It's awesome. Employment wise the Nuclear Industry in the West is huge so plenty of employment opportunities. House prices seemed to catch up to a lot of the rest of the UK over the years (minus London).

Few pics from recent walks.

Live in one of the best kept secrets in uk

Lancashire ... North East to be honest .. Beautiful ribble valley under the shadow of Pendle.

Bowland forest on our doorstep .. Dales a few minutes drive away

Fylde Coast 30 mins

Lakes 45 mins

Manchester 45 mins

Great people and lovely pubs and restaurants .. True hidden gem

Oh and great roads too

Lived in London for 18 years mainly around Leytonstone Wanstead and then Essex ne Epping .. Don't miss it one bit

Next move .. Rural west of Ireland put on the galway coast .. Just stunning .. Like my wife who comes from there !

Oh yes and the driving roads around Connemara are amazing

We live in a village on the A6 between Bedford and Luton, despite the glamourous neighbouring towns to the north and south I really like the area. There's some lovely countryside for walking and cycling and some of the country roads heading north east towards Biggleswade are pretty good for an early morning blast culminating in an obligatory cup of tea at the Old Warden to watch the old aircraft.
We've also got Hitchin nearby which is a nice place to plod around on a Saturday morning and MK if we need to do some proper shopping within 1/2hr.

However... I grew up in Devon in a small village just outsdie Exeter. I would love to move back down there and bring our (future) kids up within spitting distance of Dartmoor, beaches and river. Sadly I just can't see it happening any time soon, but thankfully we earn enough that we can go and visit the parents, family and friends pretty much any time we want.

I think we'll try to move a bit further west at least towards Buckingham/Bicester for our next house. That would knock a fair 30-45mins from our journey to the west country!
You have basically described my current location and thoughts exactly! Apart from the Devon bit, however the other half has family a tad further west in Cornwall and I too would love to move there at some point, shame my work demands I remain in close proximity to London. Which I also love!

I live in the Chew Valley, South-West of Bristol. We've been here a few months now (after renting in central Bristol for 6 months after we returned home from abroad).

It's a beautiful area, we are just on the outskirts of the Mendips and Chew Lake is a walk away. There's fishing, shooting, farm shop, lovely pubs (The Waldegrave arms in East Harptree is a favourite of mine) it's 30 mins door to door from the office in Bristol. The contrast between the City and the countryside is amazing.
The city centre was extremely noisy on a friday/saturday night but having everything on your doorstep was a big plus.

I was brought up in the country though and far, far prefer living where I am now. Quiet roads, lovely scenery and genuinely friendly people in the village, we both feel very much at home here.

Know the area well - spent 7 years at CVS, did my formative drinking in the various establishments of Chew Magna, Winford, Bishop Sutton and Compton Martin (first bar job was at the Ring O Bells). Also did my formative driving around the lake, and am glad that was all 25 years or more ago... Still know a lot of people in the area, and usually stop by whenever we're in the country.

Last place I lived in the UK was central Bristol, and loved it - home city and all that, still a City fan, and miss how compact a city Bristol is, lots of things going on, all close together, fantastic history within, and great countryside on the doorstep.

Have also lived in Sheffield, whilst at uni - stayed for 5 years in total and really did like the place. A lot of refurbishment was going on at the time - Meadowhall, Supertram, Don Valley - though still large parts felt like they needed rebuilding. Beautiful surroundings though. Not sure How I'd feel about it now - last time I went was about 15 years ago.

If we ever came back, I think Poole in Dorset would be high on the list
My OH went to school in this area too. I love the Mendips. I was born in Bristol (my luvver wink) but spent most of my life in North Somerset. Until about 3 years ago, when OH and I sold both our houses and moved to west Wales (Carmarthenshire, near the border with Ceredigion and Pembrokeshire). So now I live in the middle of a field - several, actually - instead of a housing estate. I've always been a 'country girl' (wouldn't live in a city if you paid me) but I never thought I would actually live somewhere like this smile

Our driveway in the snow:

I love the peace and quiet; sadly I have to spend most of the week working in Bristol to pay for it! We have some great roads around here, and Pembrokeshire is only a short drive away, for lovely walks and great beaches without crowds smile

The occupied six counties.
Close to, but no longer in, the area lovingly referred to as "Bandit Country" by Roy Mason (former NI minister).

Born and raised in Stevenage, now rent in Baldock just up the road (Hertfordshire).

Would love to live somewhere more scenic and cheaper, just live here to be closer to family.

So expensive just to get by here, so I'm actively looking for a higher paying job smile
I also live in baldock. I drive the buntingford road/a10 for work everyday. can't complain!

Warrington in Cheshire, moved here from Kettering in 1990

I like going back to kettering to see what 1983 looks like

I wouldn't move south unless it was South west

I went to London last summer and hated every minute I was there
In the interests of balance....

Work used to take me to Warrington once a month, I travelled by car but always wished it was by B52 so I could carpet bomb the horrible place smile

I live in Putney, easy commute and its relatively green with pals and commons, and easy to escape out to Surrey/Berkshire via main roads. Quality of driving roads is not high on my wish list when it comes to choosing a place to live.

Another West Berkshire resident having fled the traffic of Reading.

As mentioned, you get glorious countryside, but it's close enough to civilisation too.

House prices hurt (a lot)

East End of London born and bred. Moved to Gloucestershire close to half a century ago. Best move I ( we've ) ever made. Both took substantial salary cuts with the move. No regrets at all.

Took my then two schoolboy son's to show them where their Mum and Dad grew up in the East End.

Know what they said almost in synchronised union ...

WHAT A DUMP DAD!

They were right of course but, it was not when we grew up there. Probably the best place in the world to be back in those fabulous 1960s.

A small village in Shropshire, amazing in every way and lots of great driving / mountain biking on my doorstep. It's even worth my five hour commute, although thankfully I can effectively work from home a fair amount smile I can't think of anywhere else I would want to go.

A small village in South Bucks just outside of Oxford.

It's on the top of a hill and has beautiful panoramic views over rolling countryside for miles.

There is a large forest nearby plus fantastic roads and great pubs.

Perfect for a country girl like me who likes to spend weekend walking the dog whilst still being able to go to Oxford for shopping or nightlife when needed.

It can get horrendously busy with tourist and photographers at the weekends though.

I would love to live somewhere more remote in The Lakes but would miss family too much who are all currently only a few miles away
