Whilst in Subway today, there was a notice near the till saying " We do not accept £50 notes".

If its legal tender, haven't they got to accept it?

A shop does not have to sell anything to anyone AFAIK

The franchise probably wants to protect itself against fake notes, and quite likely doesn't want to be dishing out 40-something pounds change on a regular basis.

I agree that I don't think they have to sell you something if they don't want to, (Offer, invitation, acceptance/decline) although the way Subway works it'd be pretty awkward if they made the sandwich, got right to the end, then someone whipped out a £50 note to pay. Especially if the notice is indeed near the end of the process...

Might be money laundering too. Get a dodgy £50 note, but a £3 sandwich and you have £47 legitimately

Legal tender is not the same as what is acceptable for payment in any given scenario.

But a vendor can choose what they will or won't accept, and quite often places won't accept £50 and some places won't take £20. Consider all those "Exact money only" places like buses vending machines. Or places that don't take cash, like car dealerships. Sure, a briefcase with 500 £50 notes is legal tender, but you won't buy a £25k car with it in many places dealerships.

Similarly, I think you would struggle to get Subway to accept 300 1p coins for your sandwich as well.

I think 1p coins are only legal tender for sums up to 20p or so.
The point about legal tender is that if having provided you sandwich Subway demand payment of the debt, offering them legal tender clears the debt and it's their lookout if they don't accept it. Although I think this only applies to paying the debt through the courts. Also accepting legal tender carries no obligation to provide change, so an expensive way to make a point.

"Legal tender has a very narrow and technical meaning in the settlement of debts. It means that a debtor cannot successfully be sued for non-payment if he pays into court in legal tender. It does not mean that any ordinary transaction has to take place in legal tender or only within the amount denominated by the legislation. Both parties are free to agree to accept any form of payment whether legal tender or otherwise according to their wishes."

The new pound coins came out March this year stamped 2017.

Just noticed I have a new Scottish pound coin stamped 2016, any ideas, above board or not?

I haven't seen a specifically Scottish one, but virtually all of the new-style pound coins I initially had were stamped 2016, because they've been minting them for ages prior to releasing them. Just checked the pile (of 3) now and I have 1x2016 and 2x2017. First 2017 dates I've noticed.

Thanks for that, I googled and couldn't find that.

So far there's only one single design for the new coins; I don't think there's plans for variants. According to the Wiki page, 2016 round pound coins aren't intended for circulation, and there's only the single variant, so Vipers' Scottish coin might be hooky!

My 2016 one the NEW design, not the round one, anyway I have emailed the Royal Mint, see what they say.

As someone who likes squeaky clean hair every day I tend to use Vosene shampoo.

What baffles me is why does it stop giving the same squeaky clean hair after using it for a month? Then if I use some of my wifes shampoo (the usual herby, flowery, pure essence, tea tree, special nutrient st) then it's squeaky clean.

After a while it's the same with that shampoo so back to vosene and it's all good?

Weird
