I expect so; if you're looking for a brickie.

I knew an 'Ant' back in the early 80s, nobody at all ever called him Tony, I think the reasoning was that Tony was almost a separate name so Anthony had to be abbreviated to Ant.
Ant McPartlin ,n Dec,Ant Anstead off car shows.

That's 2 more onthe telly.
I had the pleasure of knowing Anthony Davidson back in the days he and my sons were racing karts. A thoroughly decent family. I knew next to nothing about how to set up a kart and one day his dad, Dennis Davidson came up to me with a bit of paper with all his settings on it! I was staggered.

I assumed at the time that his nickname Ant had more to do with his diminutive size than his name. He really was tiny.

I wonder how many of you know that his elder brother Andrew was an inmate of the house in the very first series of Big Brother!

I last saw Ant and his dad at the funeral of Martin Hines at Waltham Abbey in 2011. Anthony (not Ant!) Hamilton was there too, chatting to Nigel Mansell.

For inline engines they join the cranks into a common element. For side by side and variations thereof they use a crossbox. Some images from google will show this better than I could explain:

Thanks.

How do the jet engines do it then? Convert the forwards thrust of a jet engine into rotary motion? Would they use helicopter gearboxes or are they not strong enough?

They're turbo shafts not turbo jets. Same principle applies.

Helicopters have extremely complex gearboxes whereas a crossbox is pretty simple and it's just a case of using large/strong components to handle the torque and power.

rofl Sadly not, it looked completely standard to me. Besides, I can't think what aerodynamic effect it was having sat at 60mph in lane 2 of the M1.

All gas turbines have a rotary motion anyway as the name suggests. A jet engine uses the drive from the turbine (being pushed round by exhaust gases) simply to drive a compressor fan at the front of the engine. A turboprop uses it to drive a prop, a turboshaft to drive rotor blades etc etc.

Most 'jet' engines nowadays are turbofans, where there is a big fan bolted to the front, and it is the fan acting like a propeller than provides most of the thrust.

Cutting aluminium foil is supposed to sharpen scissors. I wouldn't have thought sandpaper would work.
