Yes, I can see what you mean.
Great Ormond Street? Well thought out point there...

I'd assume that many hospitals were originally started by religious groups and churches to help the poor and sick and they just carried on from there?

or they're named after the area they are in, like St Helier is

How did Luge, Skeleton, etc start? Those giant ice slides don't look like something that was ever formed naturally.

I think they did start with 'natural' runs down streets etc with sledges/toboggans

the Cresta Run was the first proper one AFAIK and is in a natural(ish) valley, and it's made each year anew

Why can't actors salute properly? You're playing a soldier, act like a soldier.

Sake.

Because they never attended basic training and had 'long way up, two, three, short way down' drilled into them?

Dicky, I think Chris Barrie got the salute pretty much spot on when he played the part of Arnold Rimmer in "Red Dwarf". biggrin

Well, that's something I did not know. As above, I'd just assumed that the hospital was called St Helier because it was built up by a former religious group.

One I have thought about for a while, might require a bit of "out of the box" thinking.

Say you have a blocked nose - we know that the substance and design behind the nose blocking is a defensive measure that, while unpleasant and undesirable, protects our bodies from potentially worse and more dangerous ailments.

Given this is a side effect of our immune system's process, if you were to then be gagged so as not to be able to breathe through your mouth and your hands disabled so you could not remove the gag, would you suffocate? Would your body then make a call for the greater good perhaps and unblock your nose to continue life?

Always thought about this one, suppose it is not something that anyone would be willing to test!

Yes, yes it would.

In fact, here is a reasonably effective way to clear your nose if you don't want to sniff all the time, and dont have a tissue nearby:

Hold your breath.
Pinch the top of your nose
Gently shake your head side to side, for 15-30 seconds,

Your body will naturally clear whatever snotty blockage it has built up to allow you to breathe once more.

Or wear a beret like a soldier rather than a fashion student.

Where does it clear it to? Externally or internally? I'm sitting in an open plan office with a bunged up schnozzle and would like to try this, but would like to know wither the snot before attempting. And by "top", I presume you mean bottom, i.e. the soft fleshy bit with nostril holes?

I don't know where it goes - but it goes somewhere inside. You don't need a tissue. And yes, I mean the bit with the holes, you want to completely block your nose up but do so with your breath held for full effectiveness.

Typically your nose isn’t blocked by snot, although it would appear so, it’s caused by inflammation in the sinuses. I think.

Your nose is not blocked by anything that can be moved - it has swollen so the airway is squeezed shut. And if you could not breathe through your mouth, then yes I believe you would suffocate.

Well at least that way the rest of the office will get relief from the constant sniffing.
Just the pesky paramedics getting in the way.

If I feel blocked up but blowing my nose isn't working, I find that either massaging my nose and just below the eye sockets, or massaging the inside corners of my eyes with gentle pressure helps.
The next bit might want to wait until you have had your food if you are a prone to nausea at some things

And unlike the mystery disappearance of the substances in the previous method, this way it runs out down your nasal passages in to the back of your throat.
You can then hack it up and spit it out on to the pavement outside Cash Converters or cough it in to a tissue.
