had a coal fire raging in the living room which brings that room above 25C.
Open fires tend to cool down the rest of the house, as they draw in air from the rest of the house, heat it, and fire it up the chimney
Not if it's drawing air in from somewhere within the room it is in, like the recommended air brick etc.
A lot of people don't realise how much warm is is being pulled up a chimbly when the fire is not on, that's why birds like sitting on them.

Thinking of driving to the alps for a bit of snowboarding soon.

My 3 series has;

At the back 255/35/R18
At the front 225/40/R18

Now I dont have a spare (and dont trust tyre foam working if I get a flat half way up an alp) so I was thinking of buying a spare wheel and putting it in the boot.

Now, I have two different width tyres which is a bit annoying.

Can I buy one size and use it in an emergency? From what I can tell they are pretty close to being the same but would it matter? Get the thinner tyre and use it on the back if necessary or the other way around?

Get the narrower wheel, otherwise it may not clear on the front while steering or going over bumps. I'd maybe check the offset is the same at both ends to make sure it'll clear the rear too though.

Thanks for that very helpful.

Having looked here it says an 8.5 inch rim can take a tyre up to 255mm, so could it be possible that all of my alloys are the same, but the backs just have wider tyres on?

This is the wheel I think I need;
https://www.amazon.co.uk/BMW-Genuine-8JX18-Star-Sp...

Any help?

Buy some tyre string and an inflator too.

From that wheel, I gather you have an E90 series (http://www.bmwstylewheels.com/bmw/189)? I have an e46 that runs the same setup of tyre and wheel sizes. The wheels are 8" front and 8.5" rear. On the e46 you can run a square setup with the 255 rear wheel combo. Obviously, you can also run a square setup on the 225 front wheels. Personally, I think I would go with a 225 size spare.

In much the same way 'album' went via meaning something you stuck a collection of records (as opposed to stamps) in to meaning one disc with lots of tunes.

No doubt in 100 years time PH will have questions as to why a 'boxed set' is so called when the films are pulled straight down a cable with no box in sight. In between the questions as to what 'pistons' have to do with cars of course.
There are already people who see the save icon on their office software and have no idea that it's a floppy disk. I was astounded when I found that out but it really makes sense

Balls are ball bearings.
If you notice the ball bearings only make up 50% of the space in the tracks, which allows the inner and outer bearings to be moved to allow bearings to be inserted. then they spread out the bearings and insert the cage to keep them spaced apart, which also fixes the inner and outer bearings. you can see this if you pull out the cage and pinch the inner and outer together, the balls will fall to the bottom.

interesting report on baring failures

Never thought about the etymology of footage. At least we call them movies and not talkies. Some day the term hard disk will seem weird.

I like how the speed camera sign looks like a camera from the 1880s.

When I was young the term 'wireless' was used purely by old people for what anyone else called a radio, then suddenly it started to be used by early adopters referring to high tech gadgets. Even now when I see a gadget described as 'wireless' I have to remind myself it isn't for listening to the home service.

Only in Wales is it called that, anywhere else a fart is called a fart.

Or perhaps crepitation, in polite society. link

I think you'll find that farting is correctly termed "flatulence", not "flatulance".

Hence my slight divergence into Welsh earlier. wink
