Let's be fair, there's a huge spectrum of 'trackdays' - and I struggle to be snobbish about any of them.

From exclusive 'events' operated by F1 teams, through to open sessions at world class circuits - all the way through to airfield evenings where for £40 you can have a couple of hours batting around a go kart track.

Certainly nothing inherently wrong with any car at a track day - all comes down to the driver.

I don't think anyone was being snobbish, just correcting the ridiculous assertion that the majority of cars on trackdays are sub £1000 bangers with the odd 'show off' in a decent car.

Indeed. And I suspect few people venture to the other extreme to even know of its existence or the toys people play with at either end of the money spectrum.

I’ve done days on an airfield at Abingdon on a rough surface populated by sheds. I’ve done autocross events in an old car park in Marchams for £25 with Southsea car club with old minis. I’ve also done a Goldtrack event in a GT2 at Spa. As one would imagine, the differences in what was on track was considerable.

And then you have the middle ground where you’ll often get a broad mix of stuff.

This probably belongs in the "Things that annoy you beyond reason" thread but it always annoys me that FLIR have taken a generic acronym (Forward-Looking Infrared) and turned it into a brand name. It's like a company calling itself RADAR or LASER.

Ha! I always thought it was just me with that opinion!

I’m a (was) Barr & Stroud fan myself.

The biggest disruption on the last track day I did was a pot-bellied middle-aged gentleman who turned up with a Radical complete with his own mechanic, instructor and support bus. He binned it every time he went out in the morning, often leading to a lengthy track closure whilst the Radical was recovered. Happily, he broke something that couldn't be fixed just after lunch and had to retire.

The thing about having a Radical on a track day is that one is obliged to fiddle with it until you break something and put it back on the trailer.

Ha ha - there is usually someone with all the gear and no idea. To be fair, the Goldtrack Spa day I referred to was predominantly many who could peddle a car. A great day on track with various GT3's, an almost new 458 Speciale (think he is a PHer..), various Lambos, GT2s and the usual TD specific stuff like the Radicals etc. Impeccable behaviour but certainly using the cars as intended not pussyfooting around.

I have purchased something that is entirely frivolous.

(It is not a track day or a track day car.)

Just because I have a dog now, and I love the Twitter feed from these folk.

Damn....when did you order yours? Mine has an estimated delivery date of another 10 days. If it turns up I'm in trouble as I'm on holiday!

What about a portable hard disc drive? It would probably work really well with one of those.

Much as i love cheap stty cars, a trackday is not the place for them. Hopefully any decent trackday operator will red flag you before even make the startline.

As the leader of the £3.69 magnets (might have to put that on my CV) I feel (rightly) annoyed not to have received mine yet.

Humph.

You are evil... Don't do any of the above with a high power magnet!

Does your phone still work properly after that? laugh
