Best bit of kayaking advice I can give is that it's your core that paddles, not your arms. You're really aiming to keep your arms in a fixed position, and rotate your body for the power stroke.
I can't visualize that at all! Do you have a video showing what you mean?
https://youtu.be/y_0G9GPi8D0

It took me years to nail!

Notice how the arms only change the amount of bend at the elbow at the very end of the stroke, to lift the blade out of the water.

Now, you won't find this stroke particularly easy in a non-racing boat - notice also the amount of effort through the legs braced against a very solid bar in a kind of peddling technique. Also, as mentioned, racing blades have a cross section like a comma, so move through the water diagonally.

However the principle, which is trained using the 'visualisation' of a broomstick stuck down your back which keeps you both upright, and rotating around it, is key - that's how people do immense mileage (a routine race is 12 miles, with fairly common events such as "DW" (Devises to Westminster) being over ten times that...
I kinda see what you mean. I don't think you can do that type of stroke without the seat that pivots - it looks like it involves your whole body from the legs all the way up. I can't see how you can get that rotation acting as a lever without the pivoting seat.

I think you're probably over complicating playing about in a "fun" kayak!

Racing kayak seat doesn't pivot. The leg movement is bracing the pelvis to allow the back to power through the rotation. It's exaggerated in a K1, but the idea applies to all kayaks, makes it much easier to cover distance, which is part of the fun. A weekend down the Wye is superb with some great stops.

I haven't dropped into anything like a racing boat for over fifteen years, but love jumping in an anchor of a rental canoe a couple of times a year with the better half and kids.

I bought a big inflatable dinghy from Makro when younger with a mate and it had quite a bit of space, maybe this would be a better option than the canoe for camping etc, it was good fun taking it out on lakes in sunny weather and floating around.

It was just like this and at the time cost about £80 or so:

Last Saturday I did 26km from Wolfratshausen to Munich in that boat. 5 of us in it + beer. 6h of floating interspersed with manic paddling to avoid trees, banks and weirs.

We do it most years and its a great way to spend a day. Cant fault the boat. We just ordered another 3 of them for a mates 40th in a few weeks when there will be 20 of us doing the trip.
This bloody thread has made me want one again, lots of lakes here in Austria I could use it on, to make things worse I was just googling what they are like with motors and went down a youtube rabbit hole of modified ones, some really decent looking stuff being done to these things!

So in the interest of the thread topic, everyone can take a look at this video to wet their appetite and then go on to watching some motor videos too before you then inevitably order one... So far I have resisted ordering but pretty sure its just a matter of time, or I start with the man maths and looking at more expensive/powerful ones as usual...

Since we all love a good torch and we can never have too many I might have just ordered 3 more. Watching a youtube video and these things were in it. Obviously it's a safety issue to have night lights in the halls and it provides a handy source of light for the burglar.

https://www.amazon.co.uk/xtralite-NiteSafe-Recharg...
Link to a single but I bought the 3 pack.

ETA: the picture doesn't make it clear. There is a light at the bottom that shines on the floor, acting as a night light. When you take it out of the holder/charger it turns on the torch automatically.
Video where I saw them: https://youtu.be/Y4AOaf05dnU?t=415

I expected that to be more expensive. Would have bought one but having the rest sent to me ‘on approval’ will be a pain in the balls
