If that's you cup of tea, Simon Singh made a great TV programme called the Science of Secrecy. The only two episodes I can find pick up after WWII and into the digital age. Worth the first couple of minutes to understand the 'key distribution problem'.

Sadly his two episodes on how Enigma worked and was cracked aren't online, however my favourite anecdote from them was that only the brits knew that we had cracked Enigma. So after we won WWII, we promptly gave a load of Enigma machines to all of our allies telling them that they could all now 'communicate in total secrecy'. It took them 20 years to figure out that this had enabled us to spy on them the whole time Such a classic piece of British enginuity.
