just because you're retired it doesn't mean you should organize your life around what everyone else might be doing for their benefit.
No but you might organize your life around what everyone else might be doing for your own benefit.
This. My wife sometimes asks me to run errands at the weekend. Like "could you take the garden rubbish to the 'tip' today, please?" - on a Saturday!

No. Tuesday afternoon after the lunch break crowd have thinned out is ideal. No need to queue at all then, usually.

Things about the local tip that annoy me?

Idiots "making a meal of" getting rid of stuff. I've seen you in the queue behind me, clearly fuming at the time it's taking to get into the site. Then you decide to carry your rubbish to the skips piecemeal, and then bump into Frank and Wendy, so you have a full-blown conversation while blocking access to the green waste skip. Meanwhile people still waiting in the queue are fuming about how long it's taking to get into the site...

Just dump your stuff, as fast as you possibly can, and get out. It's a 'Household Waste Recycling Centre', not a society social gathering, FFS!!! irked

Retired people using the recycling centre at the weekends. The place is only open 9 – 5 midweek (9 to 4 during winter). So Saturdays and Sundays is the only time working folk have the chance to clear out stuff, garden waste and so on. Yet I see lots of clearly retired old codgers cluttering up the place when they could easily visit during the week when it’s less busy.
Garden centres are just as bad for this! irked
An attack on our senior human rights, yeah! We demand the freedom to garden, shop, recycle and get in the way as we want, when we want.
Ooh, me back!shout

That stupid ad with the oversized muppet - workplace pension I believe. At one point, the voice over says, warningly, "It's the law'" Is this supposed to impress in some way?

It's a 'counter argument', not a 'counter discussion'. wink

The thread title asks for an unequivocal statement - not a topic open to argument.

People filling lay-bys with advert vans and cars for sale. Should be free for all to take if they park up there for those reasons.

Precious parents: When asked which is your favourite child just bloody well pick one (don't let them think this will be reflected in their inheritance though or you'll have real problems).

But, being PH, posters will challenge, discuss and disagree about what is annoying. e.g. Last years winner in a Telegraph poll was the tiny sticky labels attached to fresh fruit. Well, I ask you...

This thread is a sort of list, with interjections.

Use of the Americanism "on lock-down" in our media.

We used to have an array of meaningful phrases that actually described the situation on the ground, and conveyed the real sense of control and working through whatever the ongoing problem is... now everything is "on lock-down". Let me demonstrate:

Old Phrase => New Phrase
"Police have cordoned off the street" => "the area is on lock-down"
"Access is being denied to members of the public" => "the area is on lock-down"
"a temporary curfew is in place" => "the area is on lock-down"
"residents are being advised to remain indoors" => "the area is on lock-down"

Why? Because it is pseudo-militaristic and imposes a sense of embattlement, the sort of thing our media jizz over these days.

Lesson to be learned or what used to be called doing your fking job!

People who wander round shops with their sunglasses shoved halfway up their forehead only to walk out into the bright sunshine and use their hand to shield their eyes because glasses are for trend purposes only.

Fly tipping scumbags.

Specifically the ars.eholes that dumped their assorted garden waste and shower tray (???) in the neighbouring units' bins, plus a full 'hippo' bag of filth in the parking area.

Local council attended the scene, took photos and said if they find it dumped somewhere else - as it's not their responsibility - then they'll know who to sue. Nice. They offered to engage a company to remove the mess for only £250 + VAT.

When the sun comes out the bag properly stinks...
