Near miss (with the emphasis vocalised on the bold word) sounds like it could have been near or far when it missed.

Near miss is the one which could be interchangeable with "near hit". And causes discussions on Internet forums

Near hit doesn't make any sense. It hit or it missed.
A really far away miss is of no import whatsoever, there are [insert very big number here] of far misses every day.
A near miss is actually very close to being a hit so is much more noteworthy.

In H&S terms, we were very close to having an accident there, what can we do to make sure it doesn't happen again,

People whose immediate reaction when they see a supercar, millionaire's yacht etc. is to whinge that it's a waste of money and they should have given the money to charity, feed the starving children blah blah blah...

Never a thought for the fact that producing whatever it is has kept a large number of ordinary people in employment, suppliers in business etc. etc.

It's immensely irritating when ads for deodorant, shampoo and the like start boasting
about the product's 'technology'.

How the hell can these things have technology? What they really mean is chemistry,
or formulation, mixture, etc., etc.

And that's the phrase you're looking for..."It nearly hit". For some reason only delved into on internet fora, the more popular phrase is "near miss".

Went for CT Scan on weds. Appointment 12.30, get there 11.40 as it normally takes a good 20mins to find a space at this hospital! Great, there's a space near to where I need to be. Ticket in car, off to reception where a woman is telling the receptionist "I have to put some more money into the machine"

Receptionist - "Oh No, don't worry, as long as your ticket has the correct date on it, they'll never 'fine' you! What if your appointment runs over, or someone has a medical emergency? If they tried to 'fine' you, it would look bad for the Trust!!"

Me - "I've just put a fiver in"

Receptionist - "Never put more than £2 in, they won't do anything if your over the time"

Me - " Sh*t!!"

Got back to the car around 3pm, chap stood at the machine so I call him across and give him my ticket, explained about the 2hr thing.

Chap - "Do you want £2 for the ticket?"

Me "No, but please pass it on to anyone you see buying a ticket when you get back to your car, and ask them to do the same"

The trust must make a f*kin fortune from peoples sickness and visiting. I mean, no option for 3hrs, 4hrs, just 2 - 24hrs! Tw*ts!!

The important point you are missing is that councils do not want traffic to flow freely. They want to slow it down and disrupt it. This firstly gives them an excuse to say "tough, take the bus", and secondly gives them a future excuse to introduce congestion charging.

Councils hate cars and if they could ban them completely, they would. Except for themselves obviously, as their jobs are very important and they need a car for security reasons. You plebs can all do without.
