Played first game of Carcasonne last night and enjoyed it. Remarkably close once tally up everything at the end.

We are going to use the river expansion pack next time round but not rushing to use any farmers as want to get hang of main game first!

Good game, not sure I'm as hooked as was on Forbidden Desert but can see that will grow on me as understand the strategies more...seemed simple enough to start with but then struck me that we were both playing with completely different tactics so lots of depth I feel.

I also had my first few games last night. Like you I left rivers, farmers and bishops out of it and enjoyed it, very quick to play between 3 of us.

Farmers can be quite difficult to get your head around initially, as they're quite abstract. Can turn the game around though!

Agree, I want to wait until I'm more comfortable with it.

Yet again though the excellent Tabletop youtube channel with Will Wheaton was a fun "tutorial".

Played first game with Mrs last night.

Bit underwhelmed tbh. Seemed to be over just as it was getting interesting...

For Cards Against Humanity to be fun, you really need to be a completely dreadful person. So when you have a black card that asks; "What did Vin Diesel eat for dinner?", you have to have a certain degree of self-confidence to play the white card that says; "The cancerous remains of Jade Goody."

Well rivers and abbots (I said bishop earlier) was an easy addition to carcassonne.

So does anyone have any of the expansions and are they worth it?

Just ordered exploding kittens NSFW, never heard of it before. We've been playing Uno in the pub for a few years now so hopefully this can mix it up a bit.

We've had a few bkings in the pub for getting carried away, by the sounds of it this should continue.

This is why I refuse to play the game with my folks... My friends however have just an evil sense of humour as I do and its a lot of fun, though there are one or two of us that take it to a level that do have some evil looks... however I find that 35-40% or so of the cards are not funny or sick enough and just end up getting burned in the hope that I can get some decent ones.

If anyone has kids.. Mine are 5 and 9.

We play most nights one game out of:

Catan junior - really good.
My first carcassonne
Scotland Yard
Junior monopoly
That's my fish
Cluedo
Robot turtles
..

I love watching them grow mentally as they play more and work it out.. I really think games are good for them on so many levels.

I love boards games, it is something I am actively trying to get my minecraft addicted daughter into. My current favourites are Labyrinth and Pandemic. I am surprised no-one has mentioned Pandemic already, it is fantastic. We have also got Agricola - much as I enjoy it I feel we very quickly worked out how to score high so it doesn't feel much of a challenge now. We tried Zombies!! but didn't really take to that.

Older games we still enjoy are Tension, Articulate, Monopoly, Totopoly and the original Game of Life.
Card games wise I still love Uno, so Exploding kittens sounds good. I would love to try Cards against Humanity but our daughter is still to young!
Other good games are Banagrams (kind of like scrabble but better) and a dice game called Farkle.
A great game for playing in the pub is Pass the Pigs.

Keep the suggestions coming.

We have!

I've been into Pandemic Legacy at great length, if you think Pandemic is great, you really should give the Legacy version a go.

Diplomacy

Anyone played this? I remember getting it as a gift many years ago (think I was 14 or 15) and we tried to play it a couple of times but gave up as the rules were so complicated.

Yes I own it. But it sits gathering dust because it takes so long to play let alone learn.

I am a massive fan of Co-op's, discovered them about 2 years ago and my house is full of them.

We have just finished Pandemic Legacy and am now on an expansion of T.I.M.E. Stories (Marcys Case?).

Other great games have been mentioned and sorry for any repeats, only put here to reiterate how good they are:

Fury of Dracula
Dead of Winter (My favorite by a mile)
Eldrich Horror (Less time consuming than Arkham)
Legend of Drizzet (Adventure system of D&D, nd the other 4 versions but Drizzet has the best characters, IMO)
Thunderbirds
Last night on Earth (Only bought last week on back of Table Top video)
Defenders of the Realm (Same brilliant mechanic as pandemic...Increase, Infect, Intensify)

I could go on but if you are interested then check out Rahdo channel on you tube for great demos and Table Top with Will Wheeton. Rahdo (Richard Ham) is really quite respected and pretty active on BoardGameGeek.

Played this at a housewarming of a friend the other week, i am an old hand, and between me and my friends we are all pretty heartless monsters playing this. The Fiancée on the other hand, she said she never really wanted to play it as it sounded awful. However as it was just me, my Fiancée, the new house owner and my best man playing, she tried it.

She only went and bloody won! though was a tough game with 13, 14, 14 and 15 the score.

She had one card and remarked "Can i borrow your (work) phone to google a word as she didnt know what it meant"

I hand her phone, she checks and goes "OOhhh" here's your phone. I pick it up and the google search for 'Bukkake' is still there....i knew what the word meant already.

The black card of "The new ____________ monument in Trafalgar square" or something like that. guess which card she used.

Love her more now than ever smile

Pretty much how I got into boardgaming 30 odd years ago - used to play postally - and then at various games conventions ...

... going to games conventions exposed me to other boardgames - games which did take 8 hours to complete and for the last half of the game leave me on one supply centre doing bugger all (ie Fleet Tunis Hold!)

The basic ordering system for Diplomacy is actually pretty simple - All units (Armies/Fleets)can move one place to the next, Hold or Support another Units actions - additionally fleets can convoy armies across sea.

The complication comes in with the resolution of the orders as player moves are all simultaneous ...

... but I can't have played diplomacy for over 20 year - and quite frankly there are more family friendly conquest games out there (Diplomacy is notorious for destroying friendships/relationships etc)

Games like :

- Smallworld - https://boardgamegeek.com/boardgame/40692/small-wo...
- Game of Throne - https://boardgamegeek.com/boardgame/103343/game-th...
- Axis & Allies - https://boardgamegeek.com/boardgame/98/axis-allies
- Quarter master general - https://boardgamegeek.com/boardgame/159473/quarter...

I was playing a full 6 player game of Quarter Master general a few weeks back - looked like the Allies were going to run away with - but somehow the Germans turned things around and captured Moscow the turn before the Americans would have stormed into Tokyo - Just a fine WWII conquest game :-)

I'm also a huge board game fan. I play with a group a couple of times a week and solo 3-4 evenings.

My current favourites are:
Rallyman
Tiny rally cars racing on a track made up of different boards fitted together. Thousands of combinations of tracks with tarmac, mud and snow terrain. There is a championship on the boargame geek website where they post up new tracks each month.

Secrets of the Lost Tomb
A massive Indiana Jones style pulp fiction adventure. You explore a tomb, placing room tiles as you go and the scenarios vary from trying to stop an evil pharaoh from escaping the tomb to finding and repairing Captain Nemo's sub, the Nautilus before Russian commandos get to it.
A full co-operative game that plays up to 6 players and has really immersive gameplay. Hard to find at the moment but a reprint will be coming out later this year hopefully.

Snowdonia
A worker placement game where you have to build the railway up Mount Snowdon. One of the best Euro games out there at the moment, it has some nice rules for weather effects, different contracts and control of resources that keep each game from feeling too repetetive. Some nice expansions available and the designer frequently posts up free cards to print off and add extra variety.

I've tailored my collection to have games that can be played well solo as well as with a group and I love chilling out on the couch after work and playing a game of something while the girlfriend is watching ste telly. It's pretty much taken over from playing PC games now and doesn't make me feel anywhere near as stressed as they did.

For anyone near the Preston area, there is a new boardgame cafe opened just up from the train station on Butler Street called Dice and Donuts and the Preston Boardgame Club meets upstairs in the Adelphi 7pm every Wednesday.

O/H is into Zombicide in a big way, she has all the expansions (kickstarter exclusives as well) except for the very latest as she still has a stload of zombies to paint.

We've also been playing Cards against humanity, Superfight and Munchkin, which is fking hilarious.

I also picked up Betrayal at House On The Hill - it's a game where you as a group explore an old house (on a hill no less wink ) which is generated room by room as you go through it by drawing room tiles from a deck. Eventually one of you will trigger a "haunt" (50 to choose from) and at that point one member of your group becomes a traitor and has to active work against the group to try and win.
