I travel a lot on business. I have recently given up on taking carry-ons as the luggage is usually on the carousel by the time I've cleared passport control, or shortly after. The hassles of fighting for a space in the over head bins (and possibly having a wheelie bag at my feet) is not worth the margin gain in time on arrival. Also I don't have to unpack my bag to get at the liquids in security or drag the thing all round the airport.

Very liberating.

However, when I have to take my bag on board, I make sure that I'm one of the first on the plane so I have the pick of the overhead bins. Executive club or Speedy boarding privileges.

All about distressing my life.
100% agree. Noise cancelling headphones and some podcasts / music on my phone I am in my own little stress free world while everyone around me fights for their own little space biggrin

I don't usually buy into all this Council / Private stuff, it's all a bit too snobby for me, but....

I was walking back from the park with the kids at the weekend and noticed a someone in the street over from me had one of these hanging from their line...

I'm viewing a new place tonight.

People who try and take huge fkoff suitcases on as hand luggage.
This, definitely.

Especially if accompanied by a couple of massive bags of tat from airport shops, meaning I have to put my small rucksack under the seat.
To be honest, since the low cost airlines have become popular there could be a whole thread on "A bit council at the airport / abroad"
I essentially kicked up fk last time I was on an airplane as a result of this.

We had been on holiday in the USA, and I’d planned on bringing a guitar back with me.

I’d spoken to someone at BA when I booked the flights, again on the phone a few days before we flew, and at the airport when we checked in. No issues on the transatlantic flight taking it on as hand luggage, ran through Gatwick to get on another flight back up to Glasgow, checked at the check in desk, and again at the gate. Turns out we were the last people to board the plane. Brought my gee-tar case on with me “Sorry Sir, you can’t bring that on here”

“Why not? I’ve been told several times and made sure to get it in writing, that I could bring it on”

“We don’t have space for it”

“Can’t it go in an overhead locker?”

“They’re full”

“Yes, with suitcases, if something has to go in the hold, can’t it be a suitcase, if I find someone willing to give me the space in the overhead bin”

“No sir, everyone is entitled to their allocation of luggage space”

“Everyone except me? There are at least ten empty seats on here today, can’t it go in one of those”

“No sir, not unless you’ve paid for an extra seat, it’ll need to go down below in the hold”

“No chance, I’d like to speak to someone else now”

After a few words were exchanged with the chief attendant or whatever their title is, the Captain took it and put it with their stuff, and brought it back to me before we disembarked. Which was nice of him. But the jobsworth flight attendant was an asshole, and the overhead bins were jammed full of suitcases that I’d never have considered taking on board with me. But then, I’m moaning about all of this whilst talking about taking a large guitar case on with me!
Lots of jobsworth cabin crew when I was with BA.

Fortunately I was the man in charge and could overrule any decision I thought to be petty or obstructive.

Also, we could have disgruntled passenger for 10 hours or more.

There are some really bizarre suggestions on here.

Fly spray? Really? - suppose you all must get Jeeves to chase them around with a fly swat.
I agree.

These things on the other hand

Who but councillors would hang a seeded baguette on the ceiling.

Very common, especially after a turbulent flight or a bumpy landing. Just grateful to be on terra firma.

Something I've recently witnessed while shopping for my poussin is people being in different aisles shouting each other like they are looking for a lost child in a Forrest.

Mandy: DAVE DO YOU FANCY GRAVY
Dave: YES TREACLE GET SOME OF THAT st.

They must be three aisles apart.

Surely it's council though?

I've been on flights where there has been clapping and it's just been a normal landing/flight. Probably the destinations I choose.

Not convinced it's council, but (with no disrespect to pilots), aside from stage performances, who else gets a clap for simply doing their job?
Even as an intercontinental flight virgin, I was a bit stunned (and did not participate), the first time I experienced this. It just seemed weird to me. My point being, that had I expected some other outcome, I think I would have determined not to board the aircraft in the first place.

As all my previous experiences of flying had been with bush pilots, perhaps the experience of setting down after a comparatively Roll Royce like ride, seemed a bit mundane.

I think it's an American thing that's slowly creeping over here.. When I went to the states, the applause on internal flights there could have rivalled Phantom of the Opera in the Sydney Opera House.

While we're on the subject of live theatre, standing ovations, even for mediocre productions, seem to be de rigeur in London theatres now. It's bloody irritating.

I thought this was a Scottish thing. Seem to remember it always happened on your cheapo 18-30 holidays.

Council? Let's examine the facts:

No clapping in first class, a smattering in business(the upgrades) , but plenty as you move further down the aircraft.
