I strayed even further into "Council" over the weekend. With a new Toby Carvery opening in town, I thought I'd save the effort of cooking the usual Sunday roast and pay a visit there. The vehicles in the car park summed up the clientele perfectly.

But the food and service was excellent!
Is that Trowbridge?

Of course you were referring to the reader comment by Hookem;

It's still possible that there may have been WWII veterens at the event and it's almost certain there were people who were alive during the war there who I'm sure would have been disgusted to see someone glorifying the SS.
Not knowing the difference between a Kriegsmarine flag and an SS flag is definitely council.

I've been saying for years that we should get all of the long term unemployable and put them in civil work gangs. One of the first thing I would detail these gangs to would be re-digging Offa's Dyke.

I'm with you brother. I've been called a quasi-Nazi on here before now, but I want to see these numpties actually work for their benefits. Most of them have never paid into the system in their life, so they can't claim they're getting paid back. It's not Offa's Dyke I'm concerned about, just getting jobs done that local authorities don't seem to have the money for. My town has countless overgrown verges and roundabouts which could be cleared by unskilled labour (I don't see why they couldn't have a crash course in pothole filling as well), litter all over the place, the usual things which these oiks could deal with.

While we're about it, what exactly do people on "community service" actually do? I've never seen anyone working for the benefit of the community, so where are they dispersed? Are they really sitting in a spare room at the probation office puffing on e-fags and attempting the Sun crossword?

I to ventured into the murky underbelly of council eateries for Bank Holiday and visited a "Flaming Grill" establishment

after perusing the menu of delectable (and mostly deep fried) dishes I settled on a dish known as Mother Clucker - a fest of fried chicken in a HUGE brioche loaf (standing 13cm high no less)

was it bad, yes
did it taste good, hell yes
will I return, quite possibly

Thick as mince, the lot of them! Now they can't give blood for 12 months.

Meant to post this the other day ... fooking ludicrous and £50!! Comical
I realise who they are and what they have gone through but still.... Plus every single time someone asks about it (and they will as its not exactly subtle), you drag the past up again.

I think there must have been an unofficial Festival of Council on Llansteffan beach yesterday. Bank Holiday Monday, of course. Quad bikes. Electric micro-motorbikes ridden by three year olds. Fish and chip droppings everywhere. Dozens of out-of-control dogs marauding off-lead in a dogs-on-lead area, also the dogs-banned-from-beach-area (between 1st May and 1st October). Tattoos. Oh the tattoos. Grotesquely obese individuals lounging on the rocks. Olympic levels of swearing at Olympic volume levels. Coach parties. Parking on grass verges. Shaven bonces.

I expect I’ve missed several other standards.

Beautiful place. Must remember not to bother on Bank Holidays in future.

On my way to my hotel in Newport Pagnell from Santa Pod on Sunday evening, I passed a street in some village called "Council Street" and indeed it was. This thread instantly came to mind.

Around here, they turn up in a van marked 'Community Payback' and wear Tabards with the same logo.

Normally about a dozen of them--- of which 2 or 3 will cut the grass around the graves in the local churchyard and the rest troop backwards and forwards to the local shop to get pop and pies and seem to lounge around most of the time shooting the breeze with the supervisors.

Just like my next door neighbour - the grass at the house end has been trampled down but towards the back it's waist high. My garden is hardly award-winning, but it's not difficult to spend 10 minutes a week running the mower over it.

Proactive work? Isn't that the very definition of non-council?
