really do love popping in here and catching up,
some quality walts on patrol with the Glasgow stewarding and security companies just now,
deigning to setup their own road closures and exclusions of which the council are unaware.
thought I was going to get dragged from my cab and beaten to death last time I chose to ignore said angry walt and drop a passenger off at the side of the road, my bad though the angry harridan shouted that I couldn't stop there, so I got out the cab crossed the road and said sorry love i'm hard of hearing what are you saying
by which time, happy punters dropped off right where they wanted as I hopped back in and away

Why on earth are they doing this? Is it the season for marching up & down banging big drums & waving silly flags?
It's been debated earlier in the thread but it seems to be some sort of need to be in authority or a visible declaration of being able to cope and contribute when others can't or won't.Crossflow Kid said:

To whom can they turn in this time of tragedy?
To then look up to see our flag flying or a hi-viz vest clad leather-stetsoned boot cut be-denimed bona fide hero striding towards them - can you imagine the relief they feel?
I've been there man, with the cosmic cowboy Chemical Chaos riding shotgun - here come the cavalry no need to be scared ordinary mr/mrs joe public because we are here to direct you to the toilet area.
I was at Dunsfold Wings and Wheels Show on Saturday.
Great fun day, though I have been a couple of times before and there was not too much "new" stuff this year to differentiate it.
But, armed with my PH knowledge, the first thing I spotted was the Surrey 4x4 Response team deployed to the event and on display.
Only 3 vehicles though which was a bit poor, but they did have a flag, and a nice orange gazebo so they could be seen.
Here they are...

But wait, what's that?
A Freelander with some flashy lights might be passable... but this..

Yes. A Golf R. It does have 4 wheel drive I suppose but who are they going to be rescuing?
I didn't see them need to go and tow anyone off the extremely dry, hard ground on the hottest day of the year so far... but you know, always a pleasure to know they are on site just in case the Fire Brigade, Police and Ambulance Service also on site all became overwhelmed at the same time as the St John Ambulance, the ice cream sellers and the old lady on the craft stall.

They must have been at full stretch at the weekend, on Friday I saw a Unimog with Surrey 4x4 Response sign, towing a box trailer, so presumably that and the serious kit were deployed somewhere else Great fun day, though I have been a couple of times before and there was not too much "new" stuff this year to differentiate it.

In the early nineties I worked at a golf club. The mechanic left in the works VW Caddy to pick up some parts. He only made it to the end f the drive when the bolts holding a driveshaft to the final drive flange let go. I towed him back to the workshop with my Land-Rover. As I drew level with the members on the putting green in front of the clubhouse I leaned out of the window and delivered the strap line from the VW adverts of the day: "If only everything in life was as reliable as a Volkswagen."

Unfortunately a gun doesn't have much against a flood.
True, by there are hundreds of cammo'd up Stetson wearers that have gone full 5-oh and driven Hundreds of mikes to help out. It might be a visual waltfest, but if I was in 3m of water I'd be well happy to see chad rock up with a boat, no matter how many tactical accessories were on his person...but I'd always shape t the whole crowd got a bit of a semi when the flood started, and were fully stood to attention when the radio call came in to deploy to Houston..
