Often wondered what the attraction of being a special actually is? Is it the uniform the power? It's bad enough getting paid to do the job never mind volunteering to do it for free.
I did it for a few years during and just after university. Initial motivation was seeing whether I wanted to join as a regular. Decided I didn't but carried on because I enjoyed getting to see and do a few things outside the norm. Pursuits, drugs raids, fights etc. Did plenty of boring and unpleasant stuff too, scene preservation, sudden deaths, constant observations on prisoners (including checking the special drugs toilet!).

Left because I didn't have time alongside my day job, plus the special "management" wanted specials to stop working on general response duties (i.e. flying around on blues having adventures) and instead work basic neighbourhood foot patrol. Giving up a day off to walk around the town just didn't appeal.

Not sure if I would ever re-join. I think public opinion of the police is at an all time low, plus I have a lot more to lose now if I made a mistake on duty.

I saw at the weekend that Asda are running a 10% off event for Blue Light Card holders. Then I noticed the "who is eligible" list.

I can just imagine the conversation that got the 4x4 Walt Brigade onto this list. No doubt the administrators of the scheme lost the will to live and finally agreed that owning a knackered Disco covered in reflective tat and superfluous lightbars really does set you apart from the "normal" public and you do indeed deserve to save 5p a tin on your beans (to be eaten cold, straight from a tin opened with a bowie knife whilst keeping one eye on the mobile phone).

How do the walts prove that they are a member of 4X4 response?
I presume they have to deploy to the local Asda and undertake a tactical parking manoeuvre involving lights, sirens and cones followed by a demonstration of winching an abandoned trolley across the car park against a slight uphill gradient.

Waitrose have got Robinsons cordials reduced from £1.75 to £1.25 this week, stick that Asda!

I saw this on a car leasing site the other day, I can see the marketing benefit but it does annoy when hi-vis Discovery man gets a discount yet my wife who's a teacher doesn't.

So do you need an actual blue light card or do you just turn up in your 4x4 with beacons flashing away, clad in your hi viz with your Mum's shopping list ?

Since when is UK Visas and Immigration a blue light service?

It's not actually a requirement to have the authorisation to use blue lights...

Mum of one of my kid's mates is a GP surgery receptionist, who's made the 'helpful' offer of picking up stuff for people using her discount.

As always with these things, there's a whole heap of people who'll be eligible/included for fk all logical reason.

Indeed, even those most "persons on the Clapham omnibus" would consider reasonably entitled under this scheme are likely on a fair chunk greater than median wage alongside a pension scheme that couldn't be achieved at all in the private sector.

The usual 'key worker' suspects are getting the hump on Faceache over this 10% off, plenty of 'does this include teaching assistants' type comments.

I have just paid my £4.99 to get a Blue Light card which means I am going to have to spend some money in Asda to recoup my investment, or a £20 shop at Ann Summers who offer a very generous 20% discount.

“Muriel?”

“Yes Jeff”

“Can you wear the high-viz for me tonight together with the lanyard, and can you slot the Blue Light card in as well?”

“fk off and find yourself a flood somewhere”

I qualify on four of that list.

You need to prove your credentials and buy membership. It's 5 for 5 years. (All identifying details removed. wink )

Well worth it for those who qualify. Wife has one and just got £350 off a washing machine and dryer via Samsung.

Bought a load of tiles from Topps and I think I got 20% off.
