I remember there being a rubber collecting craze when I was at school for a brief while everyone seemed to have a collection and alot of shops sold lots of different novelty rubbers.
I imagine these days googling novelty rubber collection would throw up some unintended search results.
Edited to add, just remembered my pride and joy, and the subject of much envy was a green diplodocus shaped rubber. Totally useless as a rubber of course, not that I ever even tried. It was far too precious for that.

When I was in Primary school it was all about:
Yo-yos - especially the ones with springs and clutches in them
then
Tamagotchis
then
Scented gel pens - you were a nobody if you didn't have at least 20 different colours
then
Those alien in an egg things
then
Pokemon cards - which were swiftly banned due to fights over and stealing of "valuable" cards
oh, and I seem the remember the fashion back then was to have a huge chrome choker chain attached to the side of your jeans......
In high school, it was all about Yu-Gi-Oh cards - which swiftly went the same way as Pokemon cards.
then
LiveStrong armbands, Which pretty soon spawned serious and ironic copies in all sorts of colours, and people at school would walk round with an arm full of them up to their elbows! Looked a bit daft.....
Then came the rise of the first touchscreen and smartphones which seemed to kill everything else off.

For some reason, memories of the smiley pizza and bubblegum machine stickers are particularly strong. Oh and bloody rootbeer. Couldn't trade those for anything as everyone seemed to have an inexhaustable supply of the damned things.
Sigh...
