I was in Shoreditch on Sat eve. There was a guy who'd just parked up (some sort of Z4) and was about to go into a bistro.

Slim, tall, shaved head. Tan boots, skinny light blue jeans, fitted jacket with pocket square and waistcoat (both dark blue), open neck white cotton shirt and some silver jewellery (wrists). Some sort of silver necklace too. Holding a smart brolly.

In other words, slim, tall, sharply and expensively dressed. And he looked like an absolute penis. You could almost smell the affectation

Round the corner, some other dude wearing pretty much the same thing would no doubt have been effortlessly carrying it off.

Some of us have got it, some haven't.

I haven't.

Normal would be an open collared shirt, jumper, smart trousers and shoes. Obviously a large part of that is dependant on the season but typically that is what I wear more than anything.

The outfits I have posted are far from my everyday attire and are very much for going out. Of course it makes a big difference as to where you are going and how the people you are with are dressed too.

Did you have any luck with your morning suit?

Aside from a watch, cufflinks and wedding band I typically don't like to see men wearing jewellery but I must confess to having a soft spot for a nice brolly, though you seldom see them out and about.

I hate to see otherwise well-dressed men brandishing a golfing or telescopic umbrella - even worse is when the canopy is emblazoned with the insignia of a hotel chain or car dealership.

Not a jeans and T-shirt guy? Fair enough - I'd wear more shirts, but - ironing. Ugh. Maybe I should just suck it up and pay someone for that crap.

Heh. I class ironing my shirts as a hobby. paperbag
I get a feeling of satisfaction when I transform the damp, wrinkly material into a freshly pressed shirt.

I did that for years.
In my youth, I rented a house that lacked a washer and drier, but I needed to be suited up for work.
I discovered that most launderettes will also offer an ironing service, or pass it along to someone who will do it.

If memory serves, I owned 7 shirts, and dropped 5 in at a time for the full service wash and iron, to be collected 1-2 days later; all perfectly ironed and far better than I could have done it.
It's the way to go, as it's usually much cheaper than a shirt service from a dry cleaner.

The pre-dampening of the shirt is the part many people don't seem to know. Especially with heavier or shiny cottons in my experience.
I hate a crease on the sleeve. I once had a built-in ironing board (dropped down out of a cupboard), that was just narrow enough to allow me to put the whole sleeve over it and iron fully around, that was great. Sleeve boards are too small and just aren't stable enough.
I never iron collar folds or double cuff folds at all, I think it just causes additional wear in main points of failure.
Buttoning the top button before doing the body of the shirt just made life much easier.

Hmmmmm.... I learned to iron shirts from Lewin a long time ago and that differs from what I learned back then. I do this:

Collar - from the rear.
Yoke
Sleeves
Back
Fronts.

If it's to be worn open-necked I then revisit the fronts and starch them so the collar doesn't "flop" and also iron a fold into the collar (which I wouldn't do if a tie was to be worn).

I use spray starch and if the shirt is a tricky one I use "easy iron".

Love shirts.

Hate ironing.

Although on Sunday I ironed 17 of my shirts, will keep me going for a couple of weeks.

Typical technique:

Steam iron (obvs)
Collar
Sleeves
Yolk
Right front
Back
Left front

I don't do starching. A decent proportion of my shirts are BD collars anyway.

Has anyone tried Emmett shirts? They look good on the website, but curious about any actual experience, particularly for the MTM stuff.

My trousers aren't that short - I hiked them up to allow judgement of sock choice.

Are the boots Fly London "Rise"?

It's a style of boot that many manufacturers offer ("Jodhpur boot")

I thought these were from Crockett & Jones, but it looks slightly different to their Cottesmore model.
