I use a straight razor, and when I get it professionally sharpened it is obscenely sharp - Clinique post shave soother is great stuff.
As for aftershave, I'm late to the party but Green Irish Tweed is my new favourite - though it doesn't last as long as Aventus, it's just a nice everyday aftershave.

I found the opposite the other day, Wasting time waiting for a train, went into fancy smells shop, cant remember which.

Tried creed and green irish tweed on either wrist. The green irish tweed had the long lasting smell like creed used to, The creed like my recent decant has an initial smell then dissapeared very quickly. I hadnt tried creed in 6+ months so thought any nose fatigue would of dissapeared.

I note they now do creed cologne, So maybe they weakend the aftershave to get people onto their even more obscenely priced juice.

Irish tweed was nice, but I agree that it is a bit old man smelling for me. The old adventus I had, seemed universally liked by everyone and several people commented on it, Recent decant was pretty much dead.

Potrait of a lady by Fredric Malle, trust me!

Creed is old news now and over priced, not to mention the fact that the batches have changed and they barely last anymore. My friends girlfriend bought him aventus for Christmas last year, 100 ml bottle and I never smell it on him like I used to smell it on my brothers one from years ago.

Frederic Malle Potrait of a lady

Or Baccarat Rouge 549 by MFK, trust me, you won’t regret it!

Both are popular scents but I wasn't keen on either.

Portrait of a Lady was way too feminine for me to pull off. I gave the sample I had to my wife who liked it. Musc Ravageur was much more to my liking.

BR540 was an instant dislike. I've yet to find an MFK scent I'd buy though I've only tried a few.

As for Creed, I still like GIT and Virgin Island Water but only enough to buy a decant.

FWIW I'm wearing Zoologist Elephant today and I keep getting green woody whiffs of loveliness. Highly recommended.

I won't forget the review I found when you mentioned you'd purchased the 'variety multipack' of Zoologist last year... rofl

Here it is again for those who missed it the first time round:

Just ordered the full sample set from Zoologist. I'm a sucker for unusual scents (love the branding too) and these have been reviewed highly.

I'm especially interested in trying Bat which was the Winner of the Art and Olfaction Awards 2016 in the Independent category.

“Designed by award-winning perfumer Dr. Ellen Covey, Bat is undeniably, the strangest, most wonderfully unique perfume you will ever smell. Opening with a nearly overwhelming note of damp, primordial earth both vegetal and mineral in execution, this immediately conjures inky caverns and pitch-black, damp limestone caves. The scent then morphs into something I can only describe as “night air and velvet darkness”; I cannot say how she has done this, I only know that it is the very essence of the vast, temperate midnight sky, the glowing moon high overhead. At this point it becomes something quite different, and quite possibly even more beautiful.”

Intriguing.

I was intrigued and found this review on Reddit....

My experience with Zoologist Bat:

I read the notes before I got this sample. I thought I knew what I was getting myself into- I like fruit and I’ve found soil accord to be quite interesting at times (I like both CB Invisible Monsters and Demeter Thunderstorm). But I wasn’t expecting this.

I first applied it and caught a whiff of taking cheap shots at the bar. I couldn’t decide if it was Jack Honey or bottom shelf tequila with a lime. I decided it was both. Thankfully within minutes that toned down (but never completely disappeared) and I got a dank cave and soil. Wet leaves followed by bananas. Dole fruit cocktail. Dog. Then the fruit started to rot. Too sweet and almost nauseating. After two hours, I had to leave the house, and I was embarrassed to leave my house smelling like this. I didn’t want to subject anyone to this decaying scent so I scrubbed.

Later I washed my face and as I dried it off in the same towel that I used earlier on my hands, the smell hit me again. It was worse this time. Sickening. It’s also under my fingernail and I want it gone.

The only redeeming thing about this experience is that I imagined a painting of dogs sitting around a table, taking shots and eating Dole fruit cocktail out of a can while in a cave with bananas hanging from the ceiling. If I could paint that masterpiece, I would and it would be more popular than dogs playing poker.

This is the first time I’ve had such a visceral reaction to perfume before. Truly nauseating and I hope I can sleep tonight without catching any lingering smells.

I have a 1ml sample that I’ve only used once that I want gone out of my house, so if you want it, you can have it.

Edit: I got rid of it already, thank God

Musc Ravegeur, wow, I wish I could pull it off but I just can’t, Its a very manly old school sent that I haven’t got the minerals to try laugh, I’ve got a few 2ml testers but they’re full. They’re not selling well as I remember the 100ml being over £200 and now the 100ml is £130 (I think) where Potrait of a lady is £165 for 50ml.

I don’t know how you dislike Rouge 540, I find that scent hypnotic, it’s very sweet at first, smells like burnt sugar but it settles nicely after.

I still have a tiny bit of GIT left but I haven’t bought another as they stopped doing the 30ml bottles for £100.

Have you smelt The Night by Fredric Malle? Now that’s a powerhouse!

Tried a few Tom Fords the other day. They ranged from soap to a bad copy of Issey Mayake.

Not impressed with any of them.
I've found they can be a bit intense initially but settle down after a while into something very nice. I hated Tobacco Vanille when it first went on but after about 30 mins it was lovely.
TV I found sickly sweet when first applied. Took time to mellow down and was ok after that. Not my cup of tea though.

hehe Bat is now discontinued. Surprisingly it wasn't the worst of the Zoologist scent. That prize went to Hyrax which I sorely regretted wearing.

Toasty said:
In a mad dash for work this morning, I picked up a random Zoologist sample (Hyrax) and gave it 4 or 5 sprays before leaving the house. Walking to the train, I don't notice it much but when I get on I realise how strong this stuff is (Interlude has nothing on this) and, while interesting, isn't really that pleasant. Burnt rubber is the closest I can get to a comparison, Hyraceum is the prominent note apparently.

Certainly not an office scent.

Which is where I am. I feel sorry for my colleagues. frown

This one's going in the naughty bin when I get home.
Later in the day it got worse going from a rubber smell to a faecal one. Utter filth.

Rhinoceros isn't great (tar, rubber) but I've enjoyed all of the others. They're all very potent and long lasting.

I'm looking forward to trying TRex and Squid.

I generally use a cooling aftershave balm from Gillette as opposed to old skool aftershave.

As for Eu De Toilet - Polo by Ralph Lauren (original green bottle) Armani - original.

I have a bottle of Hugo Boss Elements which is my all time favourite. I've owned it for over 20 years and I'm saving the last drop for that special occasion.

Wish they'd bring it out again.

I bought these 2 today. The Tom Ford is one of my favourites, the Ermenegildo Zegna is really nice as well, I really only went for that one, because they didn’t have any of the Vanilla one, I bought last time, left in stock.

I first tried Creed Aventus about four years ago after reading so much about it. I got a little sample and it smelled amazing, even with a tiny amount you could still smell it on things days later.

Finally bought a 120ml bottle from John Lewis two years ago, it smelt good but just not as good as the sample I had tried before. Two years on, and having been stored in a cool, dark cupboard the smell is nothing like it was when I first bought it, it wears off very quickly.

Annoying, as I have smelt it on other people by just following them, or going into a room after them. I don't know if aftershaves just don't work on me, but no matter how much I use I never get that, you can't smell it unless you are right next to me.

there is quite the grey market on ebay for boss elements.

re: Creed, I think the idea is that they want you to pony up for the shower gel, oil, moisturiser and also previously, the deodorant stick. Looks like they have pulled the deodorant sticks again.

Anyway, in 2019 your base entry to get the same effect as per 2014 is now approx 500 sheets.

I am about half way through my first Acqua Di Azzenza run but as you can get it on 40% discount sale I will probably stick with it as my daily for 2020 as I can get into the spray, deodorant and shower gel at a price level which won't make a Russian Oligarch sweat.

I'm a bit of an Acqua di Parma fan, currently Pura for day time and Essenza for the evening.

I'm looking at Oud/Sandalo as a bit of a heavy hitter for the evening. Any thoughts?

It’s very subtle, not really sweet, and not James Bond / office boy either. I’d definitely say it’s a going out job,

Sandalo is very nice. Definitely an autumn/winter/evening choice but not overpowering.
