Chaps,

What's the deal regarding quality of different batches of Creed? Particularly Aventus.

I'm thinking of buying a bottle, either Aventus or Green Irish Tweed. I've only ever had these as decants from the usual suspects previously mentioned in the thread. I swear each time I've bought Aventus it smelled like a completely different beast. The first time: WOW, and the last I bought it: it smelled of mold.

Do the different batches smell so different? I don't want to splash out about £300 on a bottle of disappointment. I suppose the answer is to buy from an actual shop. But christ, I hate shopping.
Insidious Insider is Aventus of 2015ish but at a half decent price.

Club De Nuit Intense Man would be my pick if I was chasing an Aventus scent.

When you consider what it costs (circa 25-30 quid) you've got to *really* want the nuance that Parfums Vintage offers.

It's still not as nice as my old circa 2015 Aventus, but then I think Aventus is done to death, and I wouldn't spend Creed money or even PV money for such a ubiquitous scent.

I had a sample of Aventus from Tom, so know it was legit. CdN, which initially starts off pretty foul, mellows down and honestly, they were so similar to my nose. I also think CdN lasted longer, too!

Off topic for a tad, well, off the fragrances usually discussed on here. Think the last time I commented on here was ages (years) ago, when 'Lidl' 'aftershaves' were discussed. I'm a 'tight sod' and I mean 'tight' in that I only look for bargains and I've had many over the years, not just 'aftershaves'.

Why am I posting today?
I popped into my local 'Superdrug' this morning for some cough sweets, 'lockets' (49p, nobody does them at that price), then into Waitrose for my 'free' 3 quid coffee, 'free' newspaper etc. Didn't buy anything. Told you I'm tight!
Afterwards I decided to walk back through Superdrug, glad I did. I sprayed a bit of 'Hugo Boss' on my wrists, well, you do don't you? Then walked round the men's 'aftershaves' - glad I did. Occasionally, there are decent offers...
hang on, are my eyes deceiving me?
They seem to sell a fair amount of 'Bespoke' 100ml fragrances (all smell nice but none last) and seemingly a fair amount of this 'Artiscent' EDP, £11.99 50ml bottles. I'd sprayed it on my wrists before and to be fair you could still whiff it hours later.
'Sale' - 50p a bottle.
I'm at the counter in secs with one pack.
'Is this really 50p?'
'Yep', says lovely lady, 'won't be there long, that's some reduction isn't it?' woohoo
Dash back and grab the others as I was now late for an appointment.
Pleased though, both smell nice. £47.96 worth for a measly couple quid, can't be bad.

Go online and you'll be disappointed, it's £11.99 a bottle. LOL

I have some of these, mostly smell nice but don’t really seem to have the projection. But for 50p you can’t go wrong, I paid about £5 a bottle. There’s one that smells like Armani code, smells absolutely disgusting at opening but really nice at dry down.

Finally got round to ordering from Tom.

I have both of these as samples from Scent Sampler so I will comment on any differences.

I wore Herod today and had 3 people comment on it saying I smelled really nice. I think it is possibly my favourite fragrance. fking expensive though for a full 100ml bottle hehe

TF Ombre Leather is my favourite aftershave above all others I've tried. Gorgeous stuff.
Agreed, well I think it is hence looking for a sample. A mate was wearing it once and pretty sure it was Ombre leather.

Didn't smell like leather to me though.

Sample of it, and three others ordered beer
Scent Samples arrived, and seem genuine to me.

Ombre leather doesn't smell like leather at all to me, lovely smell

Just got the Xerjoff 40 knots……nice :-) think I’ll sample a few more Xerjoff fragrances. Summat a bit outside of the norm it seems.

Many on here tried?

My Creed Bois Du Portugal and PDM Herod (I absolutely love this fragrance) have arrived from Tom - it'll be interesting to compare to my previous samples to check for authenticity.

I’ve tried Renaissance, Nio and Mefisto. All samples, all good, worth getting a split of.

So my Creed BdP sample from Tom seems the same as from TheScentSampler.

40 knobs used to be my favourite but found it quite feminine, I’d say Naxos and nio are my favourites

I have only tried Layton and really like it too - Any other PDM that are worth seeking samples of?

I'll have to try Layton. Percival is hit and miss. I quite like it, definitely prefer Herod. My brother thinks Percival smells like toilet cleaner laugh That said, some like Creed Erolfa, which I hate hehe

Some time ago I asked about aftershave balms. I recently got this, it is mildly fragranced but certainly not overpowering and I don't think it'd interfere with other fragrances. I often shave in the evenings and not before going out so that isn't of great concern anyway.

Can I just say a huge thank you to this chap who was as good as his word and sent the above samples in the post. Even popped in a few others. A gent!

Indeed, I can barely tell the difference between The 2017 Aventus and the Emporor Extrait. If anything, the EE lasts longer!

Also, I just recently bought a bottle of Green Irish Tweed direct from Creed. With it they sent a sample of the current Aventus. This is pretty much the same as the two samples Funk sent.

All this causes some confusion. When I was first introduced to Aventus about five years ago, a sample, either from Tom or Scent Samples, it was completely and utterly different from all these three batches of Aventus already mentioned. All of which smell great, but this was... just amazing... I'm beginning to think they sent me something else by mistake. Who knows, but it smelled nothing like Aventus. A mystery.

A separate question:

What's the general opinion on buying old/discontinued fragrances? Partly for the sake of nostalgia, but also because I really loved it, I would love to buy a bottle of Versace Versus Uomo. This came out in the early nineties. It occasionally comes up on eBay, but for strong money for something that could have gone off/lost potency etc. Am I right to be concerned? Does it spoil? Perhaps it improves with age like fine wine smile Are there any other places to buy? Fragrance forums perhaps? Cheers!

I got samples of Herod and Kalan. Herod was fine but I really like the Kalan. It seems to be a bit of a marmite type fragrance from what I've read online which intrigued me. Think I'll be buying a full bottle.

Most welcome. thumbup

The 'Aventus thing' has been more about it varying so wildly and particularly since House of Creed was sold to an investment firm (although by the looks of it Blackrock sold it last year to Kering who own Gucci and others). It's not that it's bad, it's just that it's inconsistent, particularly at the price-point being asked - and others do it nearly as well for a lot less money. I would suspect your 'errant' sample was an example of the inconsistency and I would hope that with so many wide-spread comments about Aventus' decline that Creed would have taken that onboard and tried to 'right the wrong'. Maybe they have!

Re. older frags; the enemy of fragrances is heat and light. If you keep all yours in their original boxes and away from sources of heat then they should last years. Unlike wine, the one thing they don't do is get better with age!

Cheers smile

It's nice to get back into this hobby. I used to buy a lot of fragrances in my heyday in the early nineties. I've been buying a few of the big hitters from that era for a bit of nostalgia. Obsession, Fahrenheit etc.

Anyone interested in swaps?

I bought a 100ml bottle of Terre D'Hermes Vetiver Intense. Only arrived yesterday and after a couple of sprays last night and today, not sure I can get on with it. Weird, because this is another that I tried via a sample/subscription service and liked at the time... maybe i'll get used to it.

I think the vetiver is a fresher drier version of the classic; I prefer the spicier classic.
