I got switched onto Terre d’ Hermes as a recommendation from here.

It’s been a real pleasure.

It also reminded me to investigate a sample I got a few years ago from the then new private terminal at Dubai airport.

It was Hermès Le Jardin de Monsieur Li.

Absolutely fantastic scent

I'm surprised all these clones/dupes don't fall foul of copyright laws.

After all, some of these fragrance houses have deep pockets. Can you imagine someone replicating a Taylor Swift song and selling it as 'inspired by'. They'd get sued into outer space before they knew what hit them.
If they copied the bottles, they’d be in trouble.

Creating a similar version of a cocktail of aroma chemicals isn’t going cause any trouble.

I must try Beach Hut.

Current faves for summer are LV Afternoon Swim (mandarin citrus), Frederic Malle Geranium pour Monsieur (minty) and Virgin Island Water (coconut lime).

All in splits/samples though as I could spend thousands exploring what’s out there.

Well yes. Clearly.

But I just wonder why? I mean going back to my music analogy, one could argue an AI song copying a Taylor Swift song is just a similar cocktail of audio frequencies. Merely 'inspired by', no infringement here... snap 'em up quick, just a tenth of the price of a Taylor Swift song...

Perhaps the oddity is the music world rather than fragrance. And thus the topic for another thread.

I just guess it’s just difficult to prove, especially as some manufacturers can’t get the exact same recipe from batch to batch.

It’ll be down to whether something can be copyrighted or otherwise protected or not. Dances can’t be copyrighted, hence Fortnite “stealing” various dances for in game use without needing to pay or recognise the people who created them…

Can you copyright a smell? I’ve no idea, and Google isn’t 100% convinced either way - it certainly varies from country to country.

Then, is your duplicate scent actually a copy or not? How do you prove it either way? I assume it’s tricky, which is why there’s a business around copying scents…

I rarely ever wear anything but I use Versace Man. Took me ages to find something I like when I first bought it a long time back.

I also use sexy boy which I bought for fun in Japan. I think it's like Jean Paul gautier but the name is great.

Finally plunged for the gorgeous Roja Elysium cologne as Notino had it cheaper than I’ve seen it before. One for the summer.

I'm a big fan of "woody" and "musk" sort of scents, and I used to be a wearer Jean Paul Gaultier Le Male and then Acqua Di Parma Blu Mediterraneo.... but it seems these days not only have they rocketed in price but they also have very little staying power - by lunchtime the scent has all but worn off.

Reasonably recently moved onto Penhaligons and their huge range of wonderful scents and I can't recommend them enough. Started with Halfeti then last time I went through Manchester Airport Duty Free I picked up a bottle of Blazing Mister Sam too (for £50 off high street prices!). They can be a bit "how fking much?!" (annoyingly a lot of which is the presentation box and bottle, I suspect) but they really do last - doing laundry days later I can still smell it on my clothes.
Also, a little goes a long way - it's very, very strong - and I've also started getting a lot of people at work commenting that they've noticed my aftershave, it smells nice, and wondering what it is!

+ 1 for Noted Aromas

I will never be buying any private blend Tom Ford fragrances again spent literally £1000 on Oud Wood, Tuscan Leather, Neroli Portifino, Fabulous, Ombre, Noir, Black Orchid, Soleil Blanc and Jasmin Rouge.

Jo Malone doing some nice stuff that needs to be copied one called Vetiver & Golden Vanilla is amazing.

Great choices - Halfeti is my favourite scent for sure. I have Halfeti Leather too, will switch to that for a couple of years when Halfeti runs out as I don't have much call for both.

Mister Sam is fantastic - I don't think it has the staying power of Halfeti though.

A great way into the portraits if you can be bothered, Penhaligon's often put their Portraits Mansion on sale - Started at £80 think it's £95 the last time I checked.

You can sell the women's and keep the men's, almost covering the cost of it. You get Sam, Duke, Teddy and George 10mls.

My wife bought me some for Christmas. I love it.
She also bought me Gio by Armani, which we also both like.

Visited Penhaligon’s in the week to pick up a sample pack. Have tried the Halfetis so far.

The original is nice on a card and on my clothes, but does absolutely nothing on my skin. Same for Halfeti cedar, but Halfeti leather seems to be lasting longer and I can still smell it. It’s nice enough on the dry down, but not so nice I’d spend the money on it.

Hoping Cairo or Babylon are better…

As you like both those, give Erolfa a go over the spring/summer, I really rate it.

I found Erolfa had a urine-like note to it that I couldn't get past once I noticed it.
