You cannot possibly judge all of Manchester from your short stay in Strangeways.
Perhaps you should have been more careful with the soap?

Liverpool has an Ibiza-like and Kavos-type vibe around its bars, clubs and lappys. Depending on your viewpoint / social status / snobbery, people either love it or hate it.

Was in Manchester a few weeks ago. Went to the Comedy Store and the line of bars and clubs right nearby. A well-dressed, London-lite crowd, with few signs of the Liam Gallagher types. Highly recommended.

PS. Don't bother looking for any Manchester music-scene stuff while there. New bands, sounds, etc. It's pretty much all gone. The scene is almost completely dead.

What an incredibley small minded comment to make - it doesn't even make much sense. biggrin

Manchester has got something for everyone - all depends on what you like - I'm sure you can find areas where the small minded people hang out if that is what you're after. There are areas for the pretentious, areas for the cool, areas for the chavs, areas for the gays, areas for the students, areas for the.... you should get it by now.

El Capo, Tariff and Dale, Cottonopolis, Whiskey Jar, Kosmonaut, Hold Fast. Less crowded than the other end of the Northern Quarter.

Wood and Co

Alchemist, Tattu, Neighbourhood, Oast House

This is Deansgate Lock. Don't go there.

As with any big city, don't act like a dhead and you won't have any bother. smile

I worked in Manchester for about 6 years and met some good friends who I have stayed in touch with, on nights out I found myself having to defuse situations every time, lots of angry young blokes about.
Never had a seconds trouble in Liverpool, Matthew street and the Krazy house mainly.
Did find in Manc that if you are with a group of friends then most aggression will go away once it realises there are a few of you.
Definately wouldn't get trolleyed there.

Funny, that is pretty much every big town or city you go to - the only time I ever went for a night out in Liverpool I saw a few proper nasty fights, I stayed out of the way and moved on.

Spend 25 years going into Manchester regularly and lots of other places - you get trouble everywhere you go - but it's pretty easy to avoid - I've never had any real problems in Manchester.

See, I was agreeing with all of that, very sensible it was, and then you went and said Liverpool was better. What a waste of an intelligent post.

Fixed that for you, Manchester is truly a sthole for a night out, psychotic knuckle dragging blokes and slappers bussed in from the boondocks of Wigan and Rochdale.
This. It's an awful place. I've never met more small minded people than those in Manchester.
You guys sound like you've not had a great experience which is a shame.

Manchester is one of the best cities in England for a night out but you need to know where to go, just like anywhere else.

OP, there are a few areas to head to:

Spinningfields: upmarket trendy cocktail bars and restaurants. Australasia is one of my favourites but The Alchemist is also decent as is Oast House. Also head to Cloud 23 at the Hilton on Deansgate for a superb view of the city from the 23rd floor.

Northern Quarter: quite a spread out area and quite hipster-ish if you know what I mean. Head to Bluu bar and then wander round from there for the bars. More of a chilled out vibe around here.

Deansgate Locks: down at the bottom of Deansgate and has about 6 large bars all in a row under some arches. Revolution type bars, very busy, cheesy music, more of a younger crowd.

Other bars to check out: Alberts Schloss and Revolucion de Cuba on Peter Street. Epernay is also quite good near there. Corbieres has the best dukebox in town. Bock Biere Cafe has a great selection of beers.

Enjoy

Manchester is an absolutley great night out. Liverpool doesn't compare.

I totally agree with what Nezquick has said.

My favourite place at the moment is Albert Schloss.

Northern quarter is good, as is Spinningfields.

Deansgate Locks has gone downhill a bit, and is where all the youngsters go. I wouldn't bother tbh.

Thank you, really appreciate it, nothing worse going out in a new place and wasting time finding a decent place.

Manchester isn't a bad night out at all - it is a little spread out though, but hardly something to complain about...

I can recommend:

Lounge on 12 - great views
The Gas Lamp - basement bar with a bit of character
Alberts Schloss

Mr Coopers House & Garden if you fancy a meal.

A little?? Try very? Ands it almost impossible to nagivate there doesn't seem to be much of a 'route' round the place i.e. a flow of people. It's badly lit, all looks the same, huge granite buildings that go on and on with no character. There must be a policy by the council for having no junk food, we walked for maybe an hour, and found a tiny Golden Arches, where's the greggs, kebab shops etc? In most cities you fall out of a club into a takeaway. Imho all round weird, depressing, oppressive place that needs to be more accommodating to visitors.

Ha ha, some mixed feelings about Manchester!

I live in Birmingham and its great for a night out but fancied a change of scenery.

Birmingham has quite a few good places all within a 10 minute walk from each other like the Mailbox

Brindley place

Arcadian

Summer Row

Rainbow Venues

If you've never been to Brum its a good night, I just fancy a change.
