I fenced competitively for years and got pretty good results at a national level. As such, I'm well qualified to lethally force a blade into a man's heart, eye, or any organ you can name.

I don't say this to sound like I'm a goddamn assassin with an epee or anything, but honestly, if you put me in Alexandre Dumas' France, I would be like a fking God to those people. D'sastrous and the 3 Musketeers. Obviously I'd need my breeches and a properly qualified President to referee, but apart from that, I'd straight up kill everyone.

Not humble-bragging at all though, you feel me?
I'm sure you're very good at the sport but one thing I noticed when I tried that is that often you would get both people stabbing each other, the winner being the one who got the first hit in - so you will be the fastest swordsman in the graveyard.

The first strike and both swordsmen would be dead: https://youtu.be/nGearEu2PlU

Honestly? I don't think fencing has any bearing whatsoever on actual fighting.

That said, Epee, which is the best weapon, has both people getting the hit when they hit together. So it is actually a sport of hitting without being hit.

I have to agree, these are Olympic level athletes and yet it doesn't look very impressive to me at all. Perhaps we have been spoiled by unrealistic Hollywood movies but this just looks like two people steaming in, waving pointy sticks at each other rather than proper sword-fighting. Neither is trying to block or parry at all, they are going straight for the strike, safe in the knowledge that they can't get hurt. I'd like to see them try the same without all that armour on.

I think if you stick with it for longer you'd probably work out a strategy. Grappling on the ground is about figuring what the guy is trying to do or applying a counter to what he's already done.
I had a strategy.....punch them in the face every time they tried to get a grip of melaugh....seriously though....not my bag....I just wasn't interested enough in the art to care...whereas boxing took over my combat art needs 23 years ago and has remained a constant since....you should see my memorabilia collection!!!....I fkin love it??
Fair enough. I've seen boxers try that strategy in MMA; all it takes is a less than perfect punch and they're through.
yeah, as i say, i had zero bjj and they had zero boxing so all in all a bit of a pointless exercise....the guy training us was bjj based and was trying to get me to the rudiments and basics of the sport.at the age i was at (early 30s) i just couldn't be arsed....no doubt well rounded mma guys would have scoffed at my absolute zero training in nothing but boxing and a pinch of thai...and would have keylocked the st out of me in 10 seconds flat!!laugh

Fair play, I couldn't have done that. But the way he went at them, they shouldn't have been able to get up again!

He might not have knocked them out but they'd definitely be feeling that later!

Just goes to re-enforce my view that I'd me more wary of having to square up to a competent boxer who knows how to land a punch then I would any number of 8th dan masters and their flying crane, spinning bird kick techniques.

Lol

I used to fence competitively too in national squads, I could be Aramis to your d'artagnan?
I've done a bit of fencing myself and I reckon my 16lb stob mell would stand me in good stead in a street fight.

Another interesting (for me at least) video below.

It's cctv, so no sound, but it follows a BBC reporter (with a knowledge of karate) getting hassled by two drunk idiots. At 4mins it's not a quick KO video, but it does show how a real world situation develops should you not have your katana to hand.

In the context of this thread, the ending is very interesting as it shows in sharp relief the difference between a 'normal person' trained in karate vs somebody who deals with violence on a regular basis. The point being it's not the 'style' that's important, it's the way and confidence with which you deal with a situation.

Ah, the ancient art of kicking in the balls and punching in the face.

Sorry, I should have been clearer.

The sharp relief being between the 'normal' person trained in karate but not how to deal with a situation (he's generally useless) vs plod who is used to dealing with the situation and doesn't bat an eyelid.

Sparring - boxer vs TKD

Boxer would have murdered the TKD person.

Shane has some pretty good fight tips, including street fighting tips.

To be fair the plod have many advantages in the situation, not least immediate back up, stab vest, pepper spray, taser and superior protection under the law. Also that "thug" whilst being a pain in the arse and rather annoying I suspect did not really look to be a violent threat or any kind of trained killer.

Steve Morris, proper karate master, now MMA coach, probably still a psychopath. I really want but also really don't want to train with him.
Morris you say?
