Cool footballers have included Pele, Eusebio, George Best, Bobby Moore, Franz Beckenbauer, Jurgen Klinsmann, Michel Platini, Thierry Henry, and Eric Cantona . There are others. Beckham is almost cool but fails on various measures, especially the Knighthood thing. Few if any modern footballers are cool.

t about things that people should give a st about. Heston is up his own butt. Gordon Ramsey can cook, but he can also FRO, as can Marco Pierre White and Michel Roux. Raymond Blanc is cool. Anthony Bourdain is uber cool.

Gerhard Berger was way cool. Graham Hill was too much of a spiv to be cool, but he was a cool spiv. Jim Clark was icy cool. James Hunt was cool when he could be arsed to be.

It's quite alarming don't you think? Still I suppose there is at least some hope, not seen mention of Kardashian(s) or for that matter Kanye West. There are a couple of guys I've met who have been Mountain Rescuing for thirty plus years - I class them as exceptionally cool.

Yes, I'd probably look towards scarf waving, pie eating, song singing, fat middle aged men to be the arbiters of commentary about cool. But apart from Beckham, no one has heard of these football players mentioned here, least of all those people who are being heralded on these pages as being cool.
