1989 Mercedes 190e 2.0 Auto

Evening all.
Owned the 'Merc' for a year now and got a few bits and pieces on her sorted out.
Used to work in the trade and always loved the older Mercedes. The 190 being the obvious choice for me and they are somewhat under the radar with the lovely over-engineered feel.
Day I brought her home:
After getting the rusty wheel arches and other bodywork sorted. Then replacing the wheels and suspension.
Some stone chips, slight rust spots, audio and cosmetic bits to sort out next.
Must be some lovely older Mercs on here, lets see them .

In 1997 I bought a manual 190e in the same colour scheme and with the same wheel trims as your first photo! What a fantastic car it was.
I kept it 3 years then wanted a bit more pace so I got a C280 Sport - should have looked for a 2.6 190e as the C-class build quality just wasn't nearly as good.

I too love the smooth look of these oem trims, but they were scratched to buggery (picture is flattering). Trying to find mint ones that were reasonably priced was impossible, so BBS reps look the way to go for me.
Two seized rear shocks and generally rusty suspension lent to an upgrade there too.

I ran a 190E 2.0 from Aug 1998 to Aug 2000 and put about 70-80k km on the car in that time. It wasn't great on the E411 autoroute through the Ardennes, which I passed through every 2 weeks (had to change down to 4th to get up some slopes!), but it was a very solid car. Not a single fault on it, either.
For your audio changes, please don't cut the metal under the rear parcel shelf. I had rear speakers retro fitted in my car and was told the metal under the rear shelf was not to be altered at all as it's structural. That said, a decent set of speakers and the cavernous boot space, and you'll get a good sound within the car.

I have upgraded the audio in my 190. I run a Becker Indianapolis Pro headunit with iPod adapter, an Alpine KTP-445U amplifier (concealed under the plate in the passenger footwell) and a pair of Audison Prima APX4 speakers in the factory dash locations. If I wanted to take the audio further, I would not add rear speakers. Rather I would first install a sub-woofer in the boot. Then second I would swap out the co-axials for a pair mid-range speakers in the dash and I would put a pair of tweeters in the door mirror sail panels.
Brand new wheel trims are £40 each. The standard steel wheel and trim is likely lighter than those alloys and the car will handle better on it. But taste is a matter of taste.
Your car is a lovely colour.
The audio will just be a replacement headunit of the right age, probably another Becker, as the original is somewhat erratic. The four Pioneer speakers are all fine.
Some W124s look massive value at the moment as the market appears not too sure how to value them. 300-24 is a stunner and climb to big money I would expect.
