I have just signed up to Instagram and you're right - it is cringey as hell. Search for a random word and you just get loads of seflies. FFS, completely uninteresting stuff. Hot chicks in bikinis gets really, really dull as well after the 23rd page.
I hate whenever I search a car tag like #celica or whatever and I get pictures of cars that are not celicas but morons putting tags in of every single car and engine or chassis code they can think off the top of their head.

Instagram.

It's a marketplace for anyone that can take a selfie.

I have it for my interests, cars, fitness, food and engineering. (there may be a select few ladies in there too)

The search page however is full of local people trying to follow in the footsteps of their insta-idols. Gold diggers flaunting for the nearest drug dealer. Men posing like models / women outside their local posh bar. Promoting some bullst product they've been sent.

It seems like a full time job keeping up this perfect online lifestyle. I don't know how they can be bothered.

Society is getting more and more narcissistic as time goes on.

Or more insecure.

Everyone seems to be under a lot of pressure to be 'it' these days - have a great career, a great social life, go to exciting places - or you fall behind the pack.

Broader society's definition of success has changed - and it has put a lot of people - especially younger people under the microscope. So, I think people do this relentless self promotion (whether they are interesting or not) because of the fact they feel they are getting left behind and so need to approval of 'the pack' to feel they are keeping up with what society wants.

See this ridiculous pile of nonsense.....

Look at this! Look at this lifestyle! Is your lifestyle like this? All madly colourful and full of extreme sports* and experiences and surfing towards epic firework displays! I bet it is! All our lives are like this! All the cool people's lives are like this!

Wait........it's not? Oh......oh dear........what to do? I bet everyone thinks you're boring don't they? What to do, what to do?

I know - buy this watch and then you will have this super cool life!

Ahem - sorry I am verging into the advert thread territory - but its a fairly blatant use of (and deliberate stoke of the fire of) the above phenomenon

I get you. The iwatch ad is no different to the dozens of 4x4 ads showing what is in reality the life you've given up to have children. wink

Well exactly!

It's exploiting people's paranoia - my point being its probably not that people think the world of themselves all of a sudden - but society's goal posts have moved, and for some reason people now have to look like they live impossibly interesting and attractive lives

I think maybe I should go for a lie down....

Its like a 21st century version of "Keeping up with the Jones's". It fits as perfectly into this thread as it would have back then. It does seem like everyone and their dog seems to be trying to compete with each other to see who can be the coolest / richest / fittest / most interesting / whatever. I can't help but think deep down there are a lot of extremely unhappy people out there desperately seeking validation in the world. No wonder suicide rates are rising. It's all a bit pathetic really.

Part of me is glad I am boring and dull, I simply could not be arsed with these silly games people play nowadays.

I'm going to build an app: Depressogram.

Sort of like Instagram but only accepts photos of people crying, being sad or depressed. It'll also take depressing images, like fledglings on the ground with a cat lurking in the background.

Half an hour looking at that and your life will seem amazing.

Or you'll kill yourself.

The worst app overall of course being the national rail journey planner. Enough to reduce a placid man to a profaning mess it 30 seconds

People who digress on to off topic comments on threads in order to show how knowledgeable they are about some detail that's not really relevant to the discussion.

Off topic but I find TheTrainLine a lot better, although the Dutch 9292 app/site is awesome in comparison doing combined bus and train journeys.

People will actually like it. A lot of people like the "poor you" attention they get on Facebook.
