Anyone got any recommendations on travelling abroad with a little one?

Guess we need a super collapsible buggy we can take on the plane, and some form of belt in car seat for the plane?

Anyone got any cheap foldable buggy recommendations?

They sit on your lap at <2yrs old with a lapbelt. Bassinet for longer flights.

A second hand Maclaren buggy would be cheapest - you can normally take them right to the door and then they put them in the hold.

also we've been carting the car seat from home abroad with us, mainly because the Mrs is nervous to trust the hire car company doesn't reuse car seats which have been in an accident. However, we only use Hertz not local firms (after a few general bad experiences) so I don't really think it's a valid concern, and now we have 2 kids, my lobbying has paid off and we are just going to use theirs. You'll be looking for ways to reduce the luggage for sure!! So much stuff.

yes

Changes everything.

Try not to let Mum hog them completely after delivery.

yes

Or Silver Cross if you can find one. Again 2nd hand is absolutely fine.

2CV's comment ref. car seats abroad - we bagged ours (well, our 2nd seat when we got a front-facing Gp1 and we needed one for each car) and took it away each holiday with us until 18 mths ago when J was big enough for a normal booster. Going to repeat it now with A as she's coming away with us at 9 months. To start with we just used bin-liners, bubble-wrap and brown tape (put the return packaging plus some scissors in a side pocket of hold luggage), but then discovered you can get proper carriers for them.
Some bubble-wrap around the key bits seemed to keep the seat intact when put in/out of the hold, and I'm TOLD (?) that the handlers don't muck around with stuff like car seats.

a proper bag is essential yes. Put some marking on it though as they really are just plain large black rectangle things, easy to miss on the carousel!

If you buy a seat, can they sit on that? Then bring the car seat on board and stick them in that in lieu of bringing a buggy?

Sounds daft buts it's the only way I can imagine ours tolerating for a couple of hours without being a knob for the rest of the passengers..

not sure you can buy a seat in their name under 2, but you can of course buy one in the name of an adult relative who then of course has a mishap and cannot travel at the last minute...

we've actually been on flights where that would have been cheaper than paying the infant charge!

No, I dont think so but call the airline for definitive. I’ve never seen one.

You can if your kid is under 2 but you have to pay for the extra seat, and the seat meets all the regulations/EU approval etc... See the Virgins website below for the full lowdown which I guess would be pretty similar across the board.

https://flywith.virginatlantic.com/gb/en/on-the-fl...

Given the extra cost involved, I sense this isn't a popular option for most parents (and chuck the car seat into the hold luggage which is free anyway).

Congrats to the new dads.

Ah ok, So the current plan is we are flying out to South Africa for 2 weeks to go visit my parents (They run a hotel/retreat in Tulbagh [Wine region just outside cape town]).

Decided to go direct as a non direct flight sounds like a ball ache at the changeover point, Child still costs £250 to fly!

We will obviously want a car seat for out there, and a buggy. Both of those go in the hold and my daughter (19 months at time of flying) has to stay on our laps for the flight?

My missus had him on her chest, skin on skin at first for half an hour or so whilst they stitched her up etc, but she lost a lot of blood so fell asleep not too long after so the midwife plonked him in my arms, I'd pretty much never held a baby before, was quite funny seeing me trying to work out how to hold him.

10 weeks tomorrow now, still amazes me every day.. He's now started smiling at us when we smile at him, what a great feeling.

10 hours with a 19 month old and no seat of their own? Too big for a bassinet. Unless you pay for a seat they will be on your lap with a lap belt.

Thank-you

First night at home not too bad - a couple of feeds and slept right through.

The challenge so far has been an inquisitive 2 year old brother.....

Yeah, going to stump up the extra £400 for her own seat. Bet she won't use it/will cuddle us the whole way but at least it's extra space.

Due date of July 15th. 12 week scan has been done (I missed this, first one I’ve missed, due to not being able to park at the hospital and the sonographer not waiting at all, hey ho)
Bloods have been done and all come back as low risk. I’m 40 in just over 2 weeks time....... Arghhhhhhh biggrin

yea pretty much. It's worth it to ensure that no randomer is sitting with you, is how I'd see it.
