We didn't bother doing NCT classes but did private NCT classes. They were pretty cr@p but we met a good bunch of people and are still good friends with most of them.
NCT = Private. Do you mean you didn't do the ante-natal classes that the NHS offer?

Just remember in NCT classes, if you are asked, have you ever seen a birthing video before? Alien / Aliens is not the right answer wink
It did look a bit like that after my wife had finished... when the doctor handed me the baby they asked if I was going to pass out. No, not squeamish but I'm sure some do!

I hate the sight of blood, needles, etc.

When our first one was born (class 1 emergency csection) I got sprayed with a fair bit for various reasons (things were very touch and go) and the anaesthetist had an extra nurse stand behind me as it looked like I was about to go!

One for the dads already on here....

How do you maintain the correct temperature in the room the baby sleeps.

Have one of those Gro egg things which changes colour according to temp - when we turn on the heating on in the house we only really need to put it on for 1 hour and rooms gets up to temperature very quickly - unfortunately temp drops quickly too so in the middle of night the temp has dropped to about 18c and the gro egg turns blue

If the baby’s in a blanket or gro bag is that temperature ok ?

Do we need to keeep th heating on all night?

Thermostat is in landing so not really a true temp of the bedrooms..

Unfortunately (against all sorts of man rules) I just leave the heating on 19-20 degrees 24/7 now and have had it like that for about a month. Will be like that until spring I suspect.

Baby room stays at the same temp at the thermostat thankfully at least and I can sleep easier knowing it isn’t going to dip down on cold nights.

18 is fine though I wouldn’t worry about that.

Any advice on baby monitors ....

Ideally looking for:

Night vision
2 way sound
Dedicated monitor
(Secondary app/mobile log in useful but not essential)

Not bothered about sensor pads etc.
Get one with video, as it is very useful to see what they are doing, when they get to an age they have no sides on the cot. Don't worry about the pulse/breathing monitor etc etc.

My Nest thermostat is set to 18C overnight. but it's not yet dropped below that in my house (where the thermostat is at least).

As others have said, 18C with a few layers is absolutely fine. Better than overheating anyway.

Groegg thermometer here turned blue on the cold snap earlier this week.

Baby (5 months) managing to stay just about warm enough in long sleeve vest under a lightweight fleece sleepsuits an then the 2.5 tog grobag.

On normal nights where the egg stays yellow and the temperature hovers around 17-18 we manage ok with long sleeve vest under normal baby fro and 2.5 tog bag.

I did contemplate a 3.5 tog bag, but it doesn’t really help his arms stay warm anyway and they are expensive for just a few cold nights use

our two boys have had to rough it! I've seen the baby monitor say 12*C on occasions and they are perfectly healthy thankfully. A good fleecy sleepsuit, light sleepsuit under and a vest under that kept them toasty.

The official guidelines is between 16 and 20 for healthy sleep.

According to what we learned at the NCT group, a cooler room is not a bad things, babies work better if they are cold. If they are too cold, they'll tell you about it. if they are too warm, they'll just stay asleep.

Millions of children every year survive living in cold places like Russia, Norway, Canada etc. 18 degrees is just fine unless they start crying more than usual I believe.

That was maybe one or two nights when I was -3 out. We live in an old stone farmhouse! We had to keep checking they were ok but each time they were toasty!

We went camping when Junior PG was about 2 months old, she slept like a baby (just wrapped up a bit more in her travel cot between us in the tent) - Mom and dad were the ones who were too cold! (and the cars battery.)

slowly getting all the stuff bought in here ... living in Asia, all the baby stuff seems to be super crap or 3 x more expensive than the UK, so lots of ebay shopping and postage going on here.

  • Baby Buggy / Pram / Car seat thingy (as have to have the bin-lid in a car seat if you are taking a taxi here by law)
  • Loads of summer clothes (as they damn cheap as you guys head into winter)
  • Titty Pump (now there is something i never thought i would be typing on a "normal" PH thread)
  • blankets and all that sort of crap
  • funky high chair,
guess it will be a trip to Ikea for the prison cell / cot and bedding.

Will pick up a load of feeding bottles and stuff like that when over in Indonesia in December, but with Sprog due in Feb, any good tips for other items worth looking to buy online in the UK?

Get ones that you can change the teats on easily. We started off with some Philips ones that were too quick flowing for the baby at the time (we didnt know there was different ones) and then later had to change to anti colic teats, then faster flowing ones.

I dont think there's likely much you could buy in the UK of value against stuff you'd get where you are, possibly people may buy 'stuff' for you anyway though. The best things we have were given, and still used. Mostly blankets and woolens.

RE Temp our current house is small and well insulated so just dont let it get too cold, I reckon under 17 on our thermostat I would set heating to come on, that would be rare, normally house maintains a temp all night

Just dont let the room go too cold, dont really need a fancy coloured egg to work it out
