Women and men are wired differently when it comes to this sort of thing. I've really struggled to feel any connection to our 5 month old daughter, however progress is starting to be made...but not at the rate my wife is doing the same.
Honestly for me it was 6 months with the first, when they actually start doing interesting things and are beginning to be more than a straight through tube for food.
And then after that, you end up thinking the world of the annoying little sts.

As i always say, both the best and worst thing I've done.

Hey dads.

Been a few days since I last posted on here. We've named her Harriet Rose at last so it's nice calling her by her name. Big headline is Harriet has lost 11.5% of her weight which is in the cause for concern area so have to go to a drop in tomorrow for another weighing to see if she's creeped up. It really hit us both as we thought we were doing the best we could with the feeds as the wife's milk was slow to come through. Have to admit we've used a bit of formula as top ups via a cup to ensure she's getting enough now to help her weight go up along with boob and then expressed milk from a cup. Wife is doing so well and going through the 3-5 day ups and downs which we are managing well. Hopefully tomorrow she'll be at a good weight and we won't have to be admitted.

Went for our first outing to aldi and a coffee shop today which was good and bad for 4 days on. Good in the sense my wife breastfed in public for the first time but then she cried after and we are very conscious we're making a racket in the coffee shop and got uncomfortable and left. I think this will change and we won't care as much but still transitioning to that phase.

Sleep is going OK too the wife is getting a good amount as am I but nights are worse as I'm definitely in a deep sleep when I get woken up!
Don’t blame yourselves over the weight, all breastfed babies do that. The milk doesn’t come through till after half way into the first week and many babies are not that great at feeding themselves either. Don’t feel you need to switch over to formula just because of that, but obviously do what you feel is right. It will just click and it will be fine. As far as breastfeeding in public almost no one gives the slightest st these days but if you do encounter anyone then you’re her biggest advocate I.e. give it both barrels. Unusual for the missus to be getting good sleep at this stage of breastfeeding, that may change as feeding properly kicks in! Best of luck.

Totally agree with this. Our prem son was fed through a tube up his nose for the first month dropped to 3lb 10oz there wasn’t much to him at all. You should see him now age 6 he’s the biggest in his class and in size 7 clothes. Nothing to worry about you will get there.

We're at 34 weeks now, missus still soldiering on but she's had the summer off (teacher) so the next couple of weeks will be a big test. Every time she looks at me a bit funny, pulls an odd face or makes a funny noise I start panicking even though I know first timers are usually late if anything.

Got nursery all finished, and we're batch cooking food now to get us through the first month or so. Running out of jobs to do which makes me think we're overlooking something major.

We had to go into hospital because our little girl dropped too much weight in the first week. Mum was breast feeding. It was a bit of a struggle. The hospital visit was so stressful. We were tired, over awed, worried and blaming ourselves when we thought we were doing our best. The hospital were lovely, got my wife expressing via a breast pump (we'd tried this already) and our baby took a bottle with no problems. A week or two later she was taking both bottle or boob and piled on the weight.

I guess my point is that it's totally normal, it doesn't last, and you shouldn't blame yourselves. In a short while it'll be a distant memory.

Thanks everyone this has made us more assured! She's been diagnosed with a posteria tongue tie so we're being referred to have that cut which is not helping latch. Not a single midwife found it but the community support worker who's fantastic!

She's very slowly gaining weight she's gone from 11.5% loss to 9.4% but not as much as we'd of expected and we don't know why as she's feeding like crazy from boob and bottle but it's still a gain even if a small amount it's better than a loss.

Thanks for all the positive wishes. It's therapeutic to share even with complete strangers.

We've named baby Beatrice.

At the Luton NICU which must be the most stressful place for all these amazing people to work. Beatrice has entered into a controlled cooling process which they only have the facilities for here or at Cambridge (in our region). Consultant has told us all to stay away from Google and looking at potential effects. There was a swelling on the brain (the cooling limits secondary injury).

They cool baby to 33.5 degrees for 72 hours, then gradually re-heat for 12 hours.

Really scared for what the news will be after the report on Monday/Tuesday following MRI scan. She's responsive, has held my finger tight and I've tickled her toes. She had her eyes open at about 4 hours old and was reacting to the changing light. I just have no idea what to expect in terms of lasting damage.

Couldn't have done anything differently. The only delay was on arrival at hospital, which is really alarming. If it comes down to it and 4 minutes has caused long term damage, it will be difficult to dismiss the near quarter of an hour my wife spent sat on a crash trolley from the ambulance outside Triage. We were even asked for her to get up and sit in the waiting room - FFS! She's bleeding, do something. Sure enough those 15 minutes past and she was put on a monitor, within 30 seconds they pulled the alarm, the rest is a blur.

I appreciate there was a wait, but completely amazed that the circumstances didn't arouse more of a response whilst the department leader filled out some paperwork. Even the paramedic crew stood around in complete confusion. It will be difficult to forget the lack of urgency on arrival.

Keeping positive.

What a roller coaster of emotions this thread is!

Hope everything turns out ok C.A.R. - the staff in the hospitals are fantastic when things like this happen.

We find out the sex next week, but like Fonzey on this thread, every time the Mrs make a funny noise i start to worry and make sure she is ok. Im sure shes now doing it on purpose hehe

We are fanatically trying to get our house decorated before the arrival late Jan 2020. I can see me doing a lot more hours stripping wallpaper and painting after work and weekends as she is getting bigger and unable to do much, which i have already been doing for weeks. Luckily the childs bedroom only really needs a quick paint and new carpet.

All the bast C.A.R.! - Fingers crossed.

Joining this thread for a second time.. late Jan. - not looking forward to entertaining a 2 year old and a new born - that is going to be hard work!

Really hope the first one left directions on how to escape - she got them wrong.

As this is PH, we are looking into an S-Max, 65 reg or newer (to get the electric handbrake) - doubling the hp under my right foot will take some getting used to!

I'll join in this thread, my OH is 25 weeks. Had a few scares so far, one of which included her passing out in a shopping centre and having an ambulance called. Everything going well now though. Not finding out the gender, going to wait for the surprise.

Quite looking forward to it all now, after being aprehensive at first.

I'm sure they're all different, but my missus seemed to get a second wind at around 25 weeks and she's got loads done the last 5-6 weeks! She did a load of painting at 30 weeks, but needed a bit of help with the lower down edging as she couldn't get down that far laugh

This latest heatwave has knocked her for six, and she's really starting to count down the days now...

Well fingers crossed, shortly after the next scan she will be the same!

Awesome. The babies get better at feeding over time too. Also, possible a bigger contributor, the tongue-tie will have meant the baby was hardly getting any milk. The boob is clever enough that it scales production to demand, and soo it will have taken a while to meet the brand new sudden demand. Could be why the scales haven't moved as much initially. It will all get in sync though and it will really get going.

I read that as batch cooking food for the little one then realised it’s probably for you two which is crazy organising!

Take this time to relax and catch up on sleep as you won’t be getting any for the next decade wink

Oh and they can come at anytime but will probably keep you waiting. Good luck.
