With babies etc I found they generally cry for the following reasons:
- hungry
- nappy change
- cuddle
- sleep

Cycle through those 4 and you are generally golden.

Of course when they hit 5 and start getting lippy, that's when the stocks in the public square come out.
I'd add temperature to that list.

We've had room temperatures upto 27-28 degrees over this summer and it's noticable how bad babies are at thermoregulation. Take him outside where there's a breeze and he quietens down straight away.

She can't be no more than 1-2 weeks pregnant so considering abortion - has anyone gone through this?
Please don't do this.
I've been through it twice with 2 different partners. Both times it was the right decision. Certainly a traumatic experience and not one to be taken lightly but can be the right decision.

^^ this.

Obviously a deeply, deeply personal decision but can be the right one.

I’m sorry, but I can’t agree. I’m not sure this thread is the time or place for the discussion however.

I hadn't factored in the gestation in my previous response... 13 months + 9 months is almost 2 years. Ours are 2 years apart, but we planned it like that. They have a great time together, love each other hugely and just make each other laugh constantly. By contrast, there's 4 years between my wife and her brother, and they pretty much ignored each other till he was at least 25. Yes it feels a bit harder that they are both young sometimes, but it's not all the time, and the advantages of them both being young are numerous. We feel we made the right decision.

Mrs GPM and I are talking about exactly this age gap if we're to have another. We both think siblings with a small age gap would be better, so I'm following this discussion with interest. Mini GPM is almost 11 months now, so we'll have to make a decision very soon smile

We spoke about this with the first 3 years ago and in between, were still of the mind that we'll have the second when the wife's implant comes out and let nature take its course. Means eldest will be in school while wife's off with new born.

Be an age gap of 4.5 years if all is to plan.

Me and my brother are 18 months apart, her and her sister are 5 years. So we've both said what it's like with age gapped siblings.

I would count it as a positive!

Yes, lots of nappies: but for me as one leaves nappies, the other still really needs them. You get a nappy free house sooner!

Going to the same out of school classes: My wife will be adding miles to the car going to one class with Jr1, then coming back, dropping her off, taking Jr2 to a younger class.

Get all the drawing on walls over and done with in one go: No doubt I will have to repaint at least twice.

They will really really play together lots: mine are close, but 3 years difference will show up lots!

A study I read, that I searched high and low for, suggests dogs can be good play mates for a kid, in terms of both emotional development and companionship.

On a side note, this is so refreshing and why this thread is not like the rest of the forum. Fundamentally disagree with each other on a topic and move on within 4 posts. No bickering/forcing arguments and the insults.

Hi Dads

has anyone ever took their little one on a flight? Ours is 14 months at the moment, we want to take her away in October bt the mrs is a bit weary of taking her on a 4/5 hr flight to Cyprus.

I can see a few cheap deals to Spain so the flight time would be 2/2 and a half hrs. just wanted to see what peoples experiences were ?

Flown with 18 month old to France. No issues. Airports are pretty quiet at the moment so lower stress.

I'd keep to a day flight rather than anything landing late back. Pack lots of snacks and a few distractions.

Up to 2 hours in the plane has been fine.

I took a 18 ish month girl on a plane, no problems. Take sweets for them to suck / chew etc to try settle the ears, but below 2 they sit on your lap anyway, and are easily entertained by books / toys.

I repeat, take sweets for them to suck / chew to settle their ears! - we forgot, but thankfully someone else had a child on the plane who gave us some.

The fact we are rushed past security, bypass ques, board first, get extra food, get treated really well by KLM is a bonus, I admit!

Planes are so empty recently that you will probably get a free seat after takeoff.

My daughter was 6 months old when we went away and she was perfect. I’m not sure what we would do now with her being 18 months old and sleep pattern being 7pm-7am. I’m sure she would just sleep of a night in a pram. We were due to go away in 6 days time to Palma but have moved it to May.

Took a 2 year old on a 11 hour flight to South Africa..

You get car seats that are approved for use on planes, We used one of them (Diono Radian 5). Use it in the car on the way to the airport, fold it into the backpack carry case, use it on the plane and then use it in the car on the other side.

With kids you can get priority boarding, so you can get on before the rush of people to get little one sorted.

Something that makes the child swallow will help with pressurisation, and we had presents for her to unwrap on the plane. We also loaded a kindle fire tablet with her favourite tv/movies and had lots of drawing etc things to do too.

Also made sure it was an overnight flight, so she slept most of the way.

Any dads here if 2 children find that they need a roofbox for Uk holidays?

We’ve never bothered with one child but there’s 2 now and we are going away a few times in the coming months and not too sure if it’s worth investing.

We manage with a golf hatchback at the moment

You only need them for a few weeks every year? I've rented one before and it was way cheaper. Now that we are beyond the pushchair / nappies / etc stage the boot is a lot emptier.

It depends on how often you go away in the UK, how old your 2 are and whether you're likely to change cars in the next few years.

We have rented a box + bars for ~ £100 for a week for an annual holiday for the past few years when the youngest was just under a year old.
It was really useful back then as the youngest needed a pushchair, changing mats, nappies wipes etc which we could just load into the roof box and leave the boot of our Leon estate free for clothes etc.

We've managed to make do without one this year as the youngest is now starting school so no longer needed the buggy etc, everything got packed into the boot and toys in the footwells.

I couldn't justify the £500 investment in bars, fittings and box this year as I'll likely need to change the bars and fittings if I change cars, and I've nowhere to store the roofbox out of season.
