Same here, I was just brought up with it being polite. I'm far from religious and my family aren't in the slightest either.

As said further up, it's an old school superstitious thing where people believed the soul separated from the body so saying "Bless you" was to get your soul back from the devil. Load of old cobblers really.

I'm not sure what makes it polite (or impolite, for that matter, if not saying it). It's a bodily function.

I just tend to call out "Craig David!" in a Bo Selecta voice.
