Interesting stuff, not least for the nations that are NOT mentioned - by anybody. So, the entire continent of Africa (was there one mention of South Africa? perhaps one....). Also India/Pakistan/Sri Lanka/Bangladesh. What, no-one would live anywhere in Africa or India, really? (I wouldn't, I might add).

Also, no-one would live in Ireland? Even with their legendary "craic"?
I certainly wouldn't mind parts of India, but didn't make it to my Top 5.

Personally, I wouldn't include the rest of that area, or Africa - or Ireland.

It depends what your priorities are.

To raise a family, the UK is right up there among the best places in the world because of our education and health systems. But for a single person looking for excitement, fun and adventure, a lot of African countries would be way above the UK.

As for Australia's lack of history? 40,000+ years not enough for you? biggrin
40,000 years of development and all they have come up with is the boomerang, face painting and the didgeridoo?

Uruguay is quite nice. Good food, nice people, good climate.

Maybe not so good for vegetarians.

I have travelled fairly extensively, and my nominations would be :

Sweden
Denmark
Germany (particularly Bavaria)
France (except Paris)
UK (despite the weather)

The USA is just too big and diverse to generalise about. The good bits (California, Pacific NW, New England) are great, but the bad bits are horrendous. Too many guns, too much racism, too many rednecks, awful climate.

Traveled extensively and continue to travel for work. America is my favourite place, it's just got all the stuff I love. I don't get the fuss about Sweden, it's alright if you like hellishly expensive taxis and beer.
There are just so many facets to the USA you can simply move to wherever you want to be and do whatever you want to do. I worked offshore there for over ten years, in the oil game, and the fat, loud, obnoxious American IS true, but not all of them.

They have everything from high mountains, to plains, forests, deserts, beaches, and everything in between.

I have been to 46 countries, at last count, lived in several, worked in many, and I'd say the USA is probably the place I'd go to if I had a totally free choice.

SF and NY are wonderful cities but they are not really the USA. They are almost a seperate country.

Sydney, Melbourne and Brisbane however ARE quite literally half of Australia.

Biggest misrepresentation of Aussies ever. Australia is the most urbanised nation on the planet. Most Aussies would die in 24 hrs if you took them more than 15 mins away from a decent cafe latte!

Ozzies tend to congregate in big cities and few outside.

Melbourne is an awesome city, with the GOR near by and some great beaches, milder climate.

Liked sunshine coast and Noosa, Brisbane looked good for somewhere to live.

Not done Sydney yet.

Good property in Oz looks extensive and you have all the usual big city problems of crowding and traffic but there are heaps of small towns that can work too.

So we're agreed on 'Murica then. I concur. It's a smashin' place and no error.

Haha it doesn't look like we've agreed on much except that a pint in Norway is expensive!

UK gets my vote.
I currently live in Vietnam and have done for last 10 years off and on. Can't wait to get out now. If you like noise . Cheap / fake and inferior quality goods. Infrastructure that doesn't work. Horrendously dangerous road network with no rules ,and drivers with zero common sense. well this place is for you.
Beautiful countryside with stunning views , but unfortunately the locals make it their aim in life to litter it into oblivion. Such a shame .

New Zealand, only in some parts. Infrastructure is dreadful (bordering on non-first-world) and inequality is rife, but the coffee and people almost make up for it.
It's a mostly rural economy based round farming. Dirt tracks are all that are needed in many places. True, getting from the East to West coast of the South Island can be very difficult if the weather has been severe, and the earthquakes have really messed st up for a lot of people. But 'inequality'... of course there are rich and poor people but actually it's a lot easier to find work that pays OK out there. I was making the equivalent of £120 a day labouring in fields. I would say the inequality in NZ isn't a patch on parts of the UK like Cornwall or South Devon.

Getting anywhere on the South Island is miserable. Single-lane roads only, and one of those (Picton-Kaikoura-Christchurch) has been closed completely or partially for almost four years. Modern it is not.
I think my 'inequality' point was made a little inelegantly. I meant to highlight that there are a lot of poor, miserable people, who spend their days tapping away at gambling machines in pubs and sports clubs.

I spent 20 of the last 27 years living in Asia, Thailand, Singapore and the Philippines, and you echo my sentiments perfectly.

Singapore is not really dirty, but they have a very similar third world mentality as the others, behind the shiny front.

It is a joy to be back in the UK, clean, tidy, organised, civilised etc. It has its bad points, but they are far outweighed by the good. Most British people don't realise just how good they have it here, compared to the rest of the planet.

I do miss the continual 'adventure" of living in the third world, but eventually the 'quaint idiosyncrasies' turn into highly frustrating tedium.
